Catfish Contest 2014 - FINAL

Aw, lets keep it in the state at least. But wouldn’t mind being able to “poach” some of those UL cats for the North team next year:laughing: [fishin]

I like extending the contest to end of Oct. I know a lot of guys, including myself, are busy with the hunts then but it is still a good time to get out after the cats.

I like the addition of carp too. Always fun to have a bow handy when a pig appears. I saw some that would have pushed 3 feet long this year.

Also like TDT’s model that doubles scores. Assuming we adopt that model, I say it will take 190 points or better to win next year. Will be see a 200+ score? It’s possible.

“Don’t get too excited and shoot before you make sure your line is clear”… pop! “Sorry Gram pa” I have at least a half dozen fish arrows scattered around UL.

Watch your snail mail… I’ll get Catcarsen’s email and address and other stuff to ya.

That’s ok, there are only a couple times a year where the Colorado is not the consistency of thick chocolate milk where I would attempt to fish it any way. There is one spot I see weekly that I would like to try fishing in though(yes it is on the Utah side).

I think you need to distinguish between rod caught carp and stuck ones. Takes way more skill to do it with the rod and reel. Course it’s hard to shoot out of a pontoon so I’m prejudice that way. I think we need to work the sponsors early next year for the contest, I’m sure we can get some prizes, but will that ruin the fun because it gets serious? Might be kind of fun to post updates to the contest at local sports stores it could motivate more activity if the DWR is still pushing for that. Ok I’ll quit and go try reviewing my notes to see if I can do better next year. One last suggestion, what if team score included top 10 fish on each side. Keeps more people involved that way. Sort of a pain for the score keeper though. Later J

I demand a recount!

I demand a recount!

That’s silly. Catfish can’t count.

One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish,
the north done caught more than you Fish-McFisherson!

By all means, anyone wants to go through and double check, do it. Caught a few hiccups along the way, and I think we nabbed 'em, well BLK did anyway! My silly spreadsheet kept locking on me, so I’d have to save-as often. Farstrating.

Reciprical I was considering Flaming Gorge, as the question came up before this years contest, but if the river is greener on the other side. Though I can see desire to stick to the fish being caught IN Utah territory, and got no problem with that.

Jeff - separating out carp on a rod and carp by other means adds a challenge is all. About on par with the fly-contestants who might hook with a worm, then place a fly in the fish-mouth for a photo-op. Face it, we’re all on the honor system here, which is back to why I prefer prizes over a cash award. Motivate the fun-factor.

I would welcome anyone willing to help drum up prize donations. There were a few generous donations, and they will be named upon awarding. But if you’ve got any contacts on that camp-chef stuff… seconds are first place!

I’m very open to more ideas of modifications to the rules, the court-play, or other switheroos anyone’s got in mind. Now, or we can chat it up at end of ice. Or both!

John,
Forget the carp deal, but I do like top ten fish per team and keep it at actual numbers including the decimal. That 2x stuff dilutes the feel of what you actually caught. I mean 91" of fish in three fish is pretty impressive. And if you do top ten fish per team then it lets us JV members be able to help with the team score. Only problem is the south may not be able to catch that many fish. Jab jab wink. Later J

I’m pretty sure that sportsmanship warehouse would donate a prize or two. They donate to my fire department every year for our Christmas party. Al’s, with at least a two month notice, may do the same. They told me they needed a couple of months and they have a form to fill out.

I kinda like the idea of seeing if we can get some of the sporting goods stores to post updated scores and such. I think it could help motivate a little more to get out and fish.

There is only so much that you can do by yourself John, so I understand that thinks may need to stay small, but when we get closer to the next start date, maybe take a head count of those that would be willing to help and I’ll bet that you come up with a few helpers.

Like BLK said, I think extending it through October for those that want it is a fine idea, it might give me something to do if I get my buck and bull early.

Mike you are right on sponsorship from Al’s and Sportsmans. They just want a little lead time. I would be glad to help out as well. We need BLK to work with Cabelas, I’ll bet they will kick in some prizes as well. Get some north south support for prizes from each end. We should meet on the ice a couple months before and set things in motion. With several people helping out you can make a big difference in what can be done. I know on the Flotilla I could have gotten some really nice prizes if I would have set things up over a month ahead of time. Anyway be glad to help if y’all want it to go that direction. Later J

Jeff, the ice meeting idea sounds like a good idea[:)]. I would be willing to help as well if needs be. It was a fun time and could be even better with some sporting goods store recognition.

Probably stir up enough attention that I won’t have a chance, but would still be fun. Will catch up to you later on this subject. J

Liking all the input and ideas. I’d be all for anyone who’s interested in helping collect prize offers.

I really do need to pound some pavement and connect with our local sports stores. Used to get some of the Wavefishing certificates, but folks didn’t seem that thrilled, and their plastics really aren’t catfish gear so much.

We will have to bring up this idea in about Feb or Mar and get some help from down south too. I’ll help up on our end. Later J
