cabelas shopping spree!!

oh, thanks for clearing that up and possibly confusing me more lol. usually i have to see it to understand fully what you are talking about. what wt of rod would you suggest? i have talked to a few people and they said 5wt is usually the most universal. also what length and action? i want a rod thats fairly easy to cast with, but i also want to learn how to cast correctly the first time and not have to break any bad habits i form.. its easier to learn the right way first then try to learn after.

Around here, a 4, 5 or 6 weight. You mention the Uinta’s…that would be a 4 wt, but stillwaters like strawberry a 5 or 6 weight.
I am still going to say an all around rod IS a 5 weight, because you can cast bigger flies, but not over powering for the 6"
8’6" to 9’ is a great length.

I agree that the line thing is like blah, blah blah, unless you can see it. Lines are the most confusing specially these days. They keep adding more and more specialty lines.
It really will get easier, but you do have to experience it to know this.

Just take it slow and ask allot of questions.

Bigbabyfish,
I am a newbie to fly fishing this past year and my wife and I have been successfull with cheap fly rod combos…
The biggest difference for our success has been fly fishing still water and using a sinking line(scientific angler wf 6wt sinking line II)…we use wooly buggers, prince nymphys, and scuds…cast out as far as you can and vary retrieve methods…
Now that we are hooked we are looking to upgrade our rods and reels and some good floating line to approach the dry flies again.

the first few weeks were frustrstrating for me because dry fly presentation should probably be learned from an experienced fly angler/classes. I was just getting skunked mostly and frustrated with whipping flies off my line…

If I had to do it all over again, I would get fly casting classes too…dnt give up and when you have a fish on for the first time it is so much better then using bait in my opinion…

lot of wonderful people here to help you for sure…just keep asking questions…

have fun!

Ive read thru all of this and feel a need to add my .02 so here goes…

you can get a really nice combo for 100 plus without breaking the bank.. but.. look for sales on upper end rods like the sage launch that is being discontinued.. nothing wrong with the rod just they have come out with a few new models to replace it..

next the reel.. Id sugges a reel like the orvis rocky mountain turbine…its a grear reel for a great price.. and you can get extra spools to vary your lines with.. for example.. I have this reel and I have one spool loaded with a good floating line… one with a intermediate sink line. one with a dt line.. so depending on the circumstances I can easily change the spool and have the line I want.. right now the spools are on sale for like 10.. so a great deal..

as has been said dont skimp on the line.. in the long run you will be glad you took the time to find a good line..

flies.. ask here as you have or your local fly shop or shop in the area of where you are fishing.. they will know what is hot and whats not.. remember their job is to sell gear.. like flies .. but.. their passion is fly fishing so they want to make sure your are a happy camper and want to come back and stock up each time you fish..

oh and one last thing.. dont forget the camera.. we all want to see the results of your exploits..

tight lines and have fun fly fishing..

MacFly :sunglasses:

awesome! thanks everyone who has given advice on here, it was EXTREMELY helpful. the more i talk about it the more i want to get out there and get fishing. i cant wait for next week when i can go get all set up. the problem is going to be waiting till soft water on the lakes or finding time to get out to a river/stream right now. i guess i will have to go ice fishing while i wait. i figure its better to do some sort of fishing then to sit at home and stare at my fly fishing gear wishing i were fishing.

i try to fish every weekend, at the minimum the weber since its close. we are going again saturday, and you are always welcome to join us.

before u go to cabalas, check out sportsmans this is when they mark down there gear and u can get great stuff for a fraction what u would normally. i fish the weber about 90% of the time and i use a 6 weight and i love it. im goin this saturday or next (depending on the weather) and the best fly on that river is a sow bug 18-22.

Oh you get the gear and hit the river…you will be so blown away with it. Walking out there in natures beauty, seeing things you don’t normally notice, then hooking into a fish, no matter what size, and the current…It is Heaven.

lmao! what you just described flygoddess is the reason im getting into fly fishing. i love fishing the lakes with regular bait/lures, but there are usually too many people. going to be nice to be able to walk into a part of a river/stream where not many people have been and just enjoy areas that not many are able to enjoy. catching the fish is just the bonus part

Before you go to cabelas just take a look at orvis and see if anything looks like a good rod for you. I might have someone that is selling some really nice rods at a real good deal. Just dont go pay full price before contacting me. I tried calling him today but he is out of town tomorrow. I know of a 4 wt 2 pc that I almost bought myself. I forgot witch model it was though. I know 5 wts are what everybody is telling you to get but a 4 is my favorite for trout on medium sized rivers.(weber,provo). Just go to the website and check them out.

Are you talking the Chef price[;)]

I agree four is a great weight, but IF you only had ONE rod…FIVE all the way.

Cast bigger flies if needed to.

i will check it out. let me know whats going on as soon as you find out. pm me on here or text me. thanks :sunglasses:

here are your waders today:
