I’m glad to see the bubble up is coming back to life after the drought days. I used to fish the bubble up every Nov. for years and knock the white bass smooth, over 100 fish every trip, lot’s of fun that was. I haven’t fish it for quite a while.

🕶 **I’ve hit it several times this year…from ice out and through the summer and into fall. Only had one poor trip. Only got one walleye there this year but I think it is because they have so much food. The baby white bass have been thick there and they are walleye candy.**

* * *

**On a positive note, the white bass have been bigger and healthier than they have in several years. And lots of them. I have had a couple of hundred fish trips late in the year where there were multiple fish over 12 inches. They pull hard on light tackle.**

* * *

**On some trips the water has been boiling up out of the pipe and the whities were stacked up waiting for anything you wanted to throw at them. On other trips there was little or no flow and you had to hunt for scattered fish or small schools. But once you find fish you can usually score a load.**

Pretty neat to be able to home in on the bubble up. It’s been years since I spent time fishing Utah Lake, but you make me feel like I should. It’s just around the corner from my work, so it’s not like I’d have to go very far.

Glad you found the school.

🕶\*\*Utah Lake, tributaries and outlets are not the pristine and remote trout venues you enjoy so much. But, they do offer some close-in fishin’ fun. \*\*

Loah: I can see it now - you’ll post up some “noon-er quickie” trip with some unbelievable monster TROUT on your arm! (well, maybe if you hop in your time machine to get to the lake - back when)

So Twins - now you know. The 'ol man can even make Carp fillets look like tasty morsels. Next time you raid the freezer, better check the label to be sure of what smoky treats you’re sampling! 😊 I actually found my drowned crawlers, or soaked shrimp seemed to perform better in general on kitties than my carp strips. THOUGH - a squirt of some crawdad juice often induced a fresh strike! Disappearing bobbers!
I have read supporting evidence to the notion of STRIPS vs CHUNKS - so they’ll ‘waft in the wind’ - so to speak (flutter in the current).

Just vacuum sealed up a bunch of strips myself.
NOTE TO SELF: After a session with the sealer RINSE the liquid catch tray! Had a ‘mysterious’ smell in the house - the Mrs doesn’t like mysterious smells. Thought maybe the kitties had dragged ‘something’ under a couch or cabinet.
DUOH! Found it!
(it’ll probably be a while before I live that one down!
Gotta be up there with burning popcorn in a microwave!)

I was thinking the same thing. God those sure do look like a tasty treat indeed! So strips are better eh?

I got a 23 inch carp this spring from Utah Lake and I filleted it for future kitty bait. God it smelled horrible when I cut it open. No wonder it would make good kitty bait! Still I didn’t make it look professional resturant worthy like Tube Dudes.

On youtube the educational video used a power grinder to fillet those bad boys! Helps get right through the bones for sure.

🕶\*\*Hey guys, I long ago gave up trying to process carp without an electric fillet knife. Those rib bones are like tree trunks. They make even a powerful 120 V. electric knife groan a lot. But believe me…it is worth the effort. \*\*

* * *

\*\*I do the filleting and slice out the ribs…to leave a nice piece of carp meat with only the flesh bones still inside. I could leave the rib bones too but they tend to poke holes in the plastic bags and let the water drain out. Freezer burned carp meat does not work as well as properly vacuum packed or frozen. \*\*

* * *

**I do use a bit of water inside the plastic bag but squeeze out all that is not needed to remove the air from the bag. And I do not rinse the fillets as I am cutting them. Leave all the natural “flavor”.**

* * *

**Most carp will produce cross-cut strips about 3" to 4" long and 1/2" wide. That’s how I freeze them. But I usually end up cutting the strips into two bite sized pieces. Cats often pick up larger pieces and swim around with them. But they gulp and go on the bite size bits.**

* * *

**I think I have convinced myself that fresh and fresh prepared carp meat works much better than long dead carp…or some that has been in the freezer for a couple of years. I toss out all my old stuff each spring and get a new supply…adding to it as I catch the occasional buglemouth through the summer. The kitties seem to appreciate it.**

🕶Hey Tubedude, I’ve been away for a long time from this board but decided to check it out since it’s getting close to my fave time of the year (hard-deck).

Nice report. Beggin4bass and I had a lot of success for the whities right there as well in September when the kitties didn’t as so much want to play with us (that sounds bad, lol) in our usual spot to the North of there so after only one cat we decided to head there to see if the whities wanted to play. Boy did they. But, for every one keeper we had about 5 dinks hit, lol. It was a great time though. Love that lake…

🕶\*\*Welcome back to the dark side. \*\*

* * *

**I have been doing very well at the bubbleup all year…including kitties too. There really have been a lot of young whities in the mix, but using larger plastics tips the ratios a bit. And the little whities make great bait…whole. Got lots of nice kitties on them.**

**Look forward to seeing some ice reports from ya soon.**

So what’s your theory behind “flavoring” your strips. Why salt them up the night before, instead of of before they’re frozen?

I know some folks like the garlic, or anise - but that can depend on what species you’re targetting I’d suppose.

I do worry about my 'lecrics blades. Between big cats and carp - seem to give them the biggest workout! Do you sharpen you electric blades? I’ve to the diamond sharpener for the hand-held fillet knives.

</div>

🕶 **Flavoring? Most fish are attracted by several “triggers”…visual, sound and scent. The first two bring the fish to the table. The third seals the deal. The more attractive the olfactory stimulation the more likely the fish will “yawn”. And using scent is also a good way to cover up the human odors and the negative scents of gasoline, sun screen and other foreign substances that can and do repel fish.**

* * *

**I generally choose the crawdad scent over others because it is a natural food in many of the waters I fish. Secondly, it closely matches the scent of nightcrawlers…double whammy. I have tried many different scents but the 'dad juice seems to work best.**

* * *

**I do not salt and scent the strips as I freeze them for a couple of reasons. First of all, not all of what I freeze makes it to a fishing hole. If it stays in the freezer more than a few months I chuck it and replace it with fresh. No need to waste time and flavorings in advance. Secondly, adding salt raises the freezing point of the bait and does not help in the long term storage factor. Better and more cost efficient to “doctor” the bait the night before using.**

* * *

**Other flavors…like garlic and anise…are proven fish attractants. But I have found them to be more effective on trout than perch and walleyes. Catfish like garlic. So do bass. But they are usually not prime ice fishing targets and they like the crawdad just as well…if not better.**

* * *

**If you are going to be filleting big tough bony critters like carp and cats you need a strong electric. The cheapie electric turkey slicing knife you got for a wedding present ain’t gonna cut it. Literally. There is a big difference in some of the electric fillet knives on the market. Some 12V portables are as powerful as many 120V. And some 120V electrics whimper and groan when you put them against anything tougher than crappies.**

* * *

**Electric knife blades do the job by employing two serrated blades that oscillate back and forth against each other to do the cutting. While they last a long time they eventually lose their peak sharpness and cutting becomes more labored. They are difficult to sharpen. You have to have a small round diamond sharpener that fits within the grooves between the points of the serrations. And you are primarily trying to get a super sharp point on the blades rather than sharpening between the points. The points are where most of the cutting takes place. If you have one of those little hones it only takes a few light strokes from time to time to keep a good edge on the blades.**

**One thing that a lot of guys do wrong when filleting with an electric is to try to force the knife through the tough bones. If you hear the motor bogging down you are pushing too hard. A sharp blade, with proper pressure, will work through the tough bones. But, all knives have their limits and some simply will not handle the biggest fish.**

**In addition to my electrics I also have a big meat cleaver and a humongo big butcher knife. There are times when you have to hack your way through the big bones rather than finessing it. That is one of the better arguments for keeping only smaller cats and carp.**
