🕶 **Plan A for today was to hit American Fork Boat Harbor…without the motor…no frills. Wanted to see if any fish have started coming inside for the winter. Switched to plan B before leaving home. Put in the motor and battery and pointed my tube toward Lindon. Figured if there was nobody home inside the harbor I could always motor down to the bubbleup. Good plan.**

* * *

**Launched at Lindon about 7 am. Water temp 41 and air temp 41. Not often that happens. But it was exactly the same when I came in about 10:30. Except it was a heck of a lot colder in the building wind.**

* * *

**Light breeze at daybreak. Worked all around the inside of the harbor dragging a minnow on one rod and pitching plastics on the other. Saw almost nothing on sonar. Like a desert inside. Nary a tweak on either bait or plastics in an hour. Fired up the big motor (Minnkota 40#) and got the tube up on plane…headed for the bubbleup. Yeah, right.**

* * *

**Wind and chop were building a bit as I reached the bubbleup area about 8:30. DANG! They had already taken in the marker buoys. But, the old TD GPS system (triangulation, dead reckoning, past experience and luck) was working fine. Watched the sonar and the shoreline features until I figured I was about on the pipeline and then fired off a cast with the tandem plastics. BENDO. First of many whities. I love it when a plan comes together…and I get lucky.**

* * *

**I tossed over my bright orange plastic marker buoy and as it turned out I had put it in exactly the right spot. I caught fish both east and west of it…along the pipeline…but couldn’t buy a bite more than a few yards further in either direction.**

* * *

\*\*There seemed to be two separate schools of white bass…one on either side of the buoy. I would work one over for a few fish and they would slow down. Then I would move my tube and harvest a few more from the other school. \*\*

* * *

**Got several doubles on my tandem rig. Used mostly a orange chartreuse for one jig and a hot pink and silver for the other. I did change rods and rigs a couple of times but usually came back to that combo as being the hot rig. Even caught a “mixed double” at one point…a nasty old carp on the pink jig and an overmatched whitie on the other jig. I added the whitie to my basket before performing a complimentary gillectomy on the carp and releasing it unharmed.**

* * *

**As is common this time of year, in cold water, the hot pink jig probably accounted for the majority of the fish I caught. And they were gulping it down on the strike. Had to reach down in their throat to retrieve my jig on several whities.**

* * *

**Dragged a minnow for a short time but gave up because the building wind and waves made it impossible to hold position and keep from tangling up in the trailing line. No cats and no walleyes.**

* * *

**Probably caught over 50 white bass before 10 am. Kept 25 to 30 for the fillet board. Most fish were healthy and at least 10 to 11 inches. Plenty of footlongs. Tossed back a bunch of fat 9 and 10 inchers.**

* * *

\*\*About 10 I could feel the wind picking up a bit more and I was getting bounced around a lot more in my tube. Plus, the wind was working on my wet fingertips in my fingerless gloves. TDC. The wind direction was also changing to a more northerly direction so I knew that the longer I waited to boogie back to the ramp the more work it would be on me and the motor to plow back through the slop. So I scooped up my marker buoy and started in. Good thing I did because the wind kept getting worse all the way back in. \*\*

* * *

**Only saw a couple of bank tanglers along the shoreline between Lindon and the bubbleup. Not a single boat launched today. No married ones either. Cuts way down on the power squadron problems. Oh yeah, no skeeters neither.**

* * *

**With current water temps at 40 and a cold front on the way it won’t be long until conditions are right for the harbors to start skimming over on calm nights. That will be when the whities come charging in and the annual whitie bash will begin. Sometimes you can do well around the docks just before ice up and while the ice is still too thin to walk on. I am sure there will be reports. But don’t look for many more from me. Stick a fork in me. I’m done.**

TD it is amazing that you can find the spot with the buoys gone and land dead on. If the fish were not home only a few yards either way that is amazing. Darn I dont think I got hot pink from you. Possibly another trip to the store. Anyway good on ya for finding the fish and making it safely back to shore.

</div>

🕶 **I’d rather be lucky than good…or good and lucky.**

* * *

**Truth is that I have had to locate the ZONE quite a few other times before…not always as successfully. And the fish may not even be in the area. Plenty of times it is just another barren spot on the lake floor.**

* * *

**But those fish are in there for some food. Almost all the fish I brought home had stomach contents and some had two or three recently munched minnows…crappies, bluegills and what looked like fathead minnows. I think they hang around the bubbleup and then raid the nearby weedbeds and reeds for the groceries.**

* * *

**Hey…I showed you the pinkies and told you that they worked well in the cold weather months. But they also work surprisingly well at other times of the year. Always interesting to bring in a big ol’ kitty with pink lips…as in the attached pic.**

* * *

**You can find the plastics at either Sportsmans or Cabelas. And I know the guy who makes the heads.**

Your amazing Pat. It is sad to see the season come to an end. I will most likely just fly rod the local ponds til they freeze over. Then I am going to try to tie some flies. That should be ugly. I know you will stay busy. I have in mind some modifications for my toon . Would like to come talk about it some time . Probally after the Holidays.

TD you quitting for the year or just waiting for ice? I’m just getting ready to try again since I got a few of my fall jobs caught up now. But I like trout too so they are starting to taste better this time of year anyway. Well I always have enjoyed your stories this year even if I didn’t chime in. I appreciate the tips and I think you have made me a better fisherman. Thanks J

Sounds like one of Pooh Bears blustery days - except you gots fish 'stead of the honey pot! But alas - no kitties come to play today? Sounds like some fun on the whities - dang if that boy don’t got a way to sniff em out!

Sure you don’t just have that marker doused with chum - so where-ever IT lands the fish come to you?
(teehee [:p])

Nice that you can skip the ‘weathery’ weekend, and get out when it turns nice again - well, nice for fall…
Still hoping to sniggle one more float trip before things ‘really’ change on us!

Man that is sweeeeet! Glad you did well and found your spot even if the markers were gone. I am planning on going out to Utah Lake tomorrow for some shore fishing ( I don’t have a boat or a tube yet [frown] ) so your report gives me some hope. I will have to tie on a couple of jigs on one pole and probably fish shrimp with the other and see how I do. Always a pleasure reading your reports. Keep them coming!

🕶**I am probably (maybe) through with Utah Lake for this year…open water. But I will still be launching my tube on Deer Creek, Pineview, Willard and ???. I keep a floatin’ until there ain’t no floatable water. Then I get out the auger.**

Thought the first post failed. Schwing - it’s there.

But just to say - thanks for the post. I gotta get some of that whitie action for my boy one of these daze! Just wish I could ‘tesser’ down to UL harbors for a quickie!

I don’t think Cutler is quite done with me though - she’ll be flowing and moving water for quite some time.

🕶 **Thanks. Always the potential for finding some fish. Pelican Bay is a good late fall spot at times. Ditto for American Fork. Both offer some good fishing for folks limited to casting from the shore or docks.**

“Sure you don’t just have that marker doused with chum - so where-ever IT lands the fish come to you?”

🕶 **Ooops. BUSTED! And just when I had most folks convinced that I use the marker to help me stay on top of fish I have already found.**

**I didn’t really get much of a chance to fish for anything besides whities today. The wind made it impossible to properly fish the minnows. And when it is this cold the kitties are not much on chasing lures. They will snarf up some tasty tidbits but they won’t work for it.**

**I have caught cats at Lindon clear into December. But it takes a nice calm day at the end of several warm calm days. And you gotta fish all ahead dead slow…and you really have to be tuned in to light bites. Impossible with wind.**

🕶\*\*As those who know me well will verify, I ain’t hard to talk into a fishing trip. Communication is the key. Let me know when you are planning a trip…or might be available for a meetup. \*\*

* * *

**I am retired and prefer to fish weekdays but I’m not a fanatic about it. I plan my trips around weather and fishing reports. If the best shot looks to be on a weekend then I’m down for it.**

</div>

🕶 **I wouldn’t plan any trips to UL for white bass until the hard deck settles in and the fish are ON. But when the first reports come in you gotta head south. The best fishing is within the first few days of ice up. Then the combination of fishing pressure and cleaned up food supplies usually push the fish back out into the open lake.**

* * *

**Best bet for getting a youngster into fun whitie action is to wait until the “spring fling” in May. It is much warmer and nicer then and there are lots of productive spots around the lake that can keep a young lad busy.**

* * *

**As long as your local waters are still producing you should take advantage of them. There is an old axiom among anglers that you should never leave good fishing to find other fish.**

</div>

"So Tube Dude, you don’t like to use carp strips and meat for kitty bait? "

🕶 **Who said I didn’t? Over the course of a full year of cattin’ there will be several trips where carp pizza is the number one producer for the day. I harvest quite a few carp each year to process into my special carp strips. And I take them on most trips where kitties are on the target list.**

* * *

**But on most of those trips I also take both nightcrawlers and minnows. Some trips I take white bass meat…or whole small white bass.**

* * *

**In short, I take a kitty buffet and let the fishies tell me what they want on any given day. It ain’t always the same.**

* * *

**The last few trips that I have fished both minnows and carp meat the action has been better on the minnows. At some times of the year they do seem to develop preferences for one or the other.**
