I try to do the same, but once we get there they start whinning…! [;)]
That is easily fixed (unless they are family), just don’t invite them again.

We have always done well at CCE, but it seems the reports have not been good this year. Try walking across the bay from the marina. Its a long walk but with the conditions right now its not to bad just pack light and try to stay on the snowmobile tracks for easier walking! Fish in 20 to 35 feet of water off a point or area that looks fishy, and move around if your not catching anything. Use a 2 1/2 inch white tube jig and tip it with a minnow or a mealworm. If you have a fish finder then look for fish at any depth. If no fish finder then stay a foot or two off the bottom. Thats where the majority of the fish are. Keep trying different things and don’t be afraid to move and you will get into them ![]()
Thanks for the info.
Glad to hear you guys got into them. It was very slow goings over on the Soldier Creek side. We only caught 4 between two of us and we moved around too. We still did better than anyone else we talked to or observed in that area. I think the full moon had a little to do with how slow it was during the day…
First off, better to be a little shallow than a little deep. I prefer to be in water from about 23 to 27’ (one can fish much shallower really early in the day), but that can change at anytime, and as the day progresses from early towards noon and mid-afternoon I sometimes move a little deeper (up to 45’) if the catching slows. If fishing with two rods, I like to put one rod on the bottom and the second rod is usually put about 15’ down. On the bottom rod, don’t be afraid to drop and bounce it off of the bottom every few minutes, or sometimes even more often. I will bounce it off the bottom three or four times, then lift it up a couple inches and hold it there for a few seconds. If I don’t get a bite I will raise it high enough that I can see it on the fishfinder, and either let it sit for a few minutes while I jig the suspended rod, or continue jigging the bottom rod. Sometimes, if I see a fish on my finder that doesn’t seem to be interested in one of my jigs I will either drop or raise the other rod to the same depth as the fish (at this point both rods are at the same depth) and frequently the fish will hit the new offering. I will tip one of my tubes with a small piece of chub or similar and tip the other one with one or two mealworms. If I use two mealworms (I like the giant size ones) I will put the first mealworm on by just running the hook through the middle of it so that both ends are free to wiggle, and then I will put the second mealworm on the typical way.
Just joined. Have been viewing forums and reading posts for months. Excited to be a part of it. Relatively new to ice fishing. Strawberry is definitely my favorite hole. Fish it successfully in spring and fall. First ice trip was Sunday 1/11/09. Set up my new QF3 in Tent City @ 8:30am. Seemed like the thing to do. What a joke. It was so noisy with OHV’s and gas augers I thought I was @ the motocross. Got skunked. Tried white, chartreuse and yellow glow tube jigs tipped with meal or wax worms. Any where from 15-35 feet of water. Not a bite. Great to hear success stories. Will keep gathering info and continue to learn the art. You guys all seem great.
My apologies. I will check spelling and proof read before I post. First post jitters. Corrections: viewing, 1/11/09.
Welcome to BFT and glad you finally joined. I have been able to catch a few (usually less than 10) fishing around the so-called tent city, but I have had to get there before daylight and it has always shut down shortly after all of the noise of the snowmobiles and other excitement begins.
Hey Kent I think that walk is about 2/3rds of a mile. And for anyone that goes with Kent watch out he gets around on that ice like a young buck in his 20’s.
We should plan a trip this weekend.

Wish I could Mike, but I will be in training Friday evening and all day Saturday. I am taking one of my grandkids ice fishing on Martin Luther King, Jr Day. Not sure where we will end up.
well havent ben to the berry in a cupple of weeks well it was the first. Not a bad day my fatherinlaw put a 11lb on the ice . good for him bad for me other than that i think we iced 3 more. the pic is in strawbery"s store[fishin]
Was it that 27"+/- 11lb. rainbow that the cashier has on their screen saver?
That fish was huge.
NICE CATCH !
Kent, I definitely had a good time…let’s hit the ice again sometime this winter! No reason to be embarrassed. I like to think that I’ve honed my fishing skills over the past three and a half decades. Not to mention, maybe I had a little luck on my side after having a couple unproductive (for me) trips recently. Better to be lucky than good! I’m usually the one putting on the clinic when I go fishing…but lately I’ve been getting smoked! [crazy]
[;)] Yes that be the one it was 29’’ 11lb
