I am sorry. The way I have read it is you can catch a limit. Take it home and freeze it or can it or whatever. But you can go out and get an other limit before consuming the first. Maybe I read this wrong.
I was a little vague, I didn’t mean anything illegal or same day.

I talked to Damon while he was at Henry’s and also several times with Dan Garren, and it was the locals (Idahoans) that wanted the extended season at Henry’s.
I am not saying tourist don’t cap on this.

What it is is what it is. I do think that is one example that needs the Harvesting however, which was the topic. Didn’t mean to detour that.

Not uncommon to see Mexicans with buckets full of fish, all kinds and sizes. Did you know they fish with beer cans? Had opportunity to salvage lots of trout, but I’d rather spent my money to keep beef frozen. Morts are 2 bucks a bag. I kill carp cuz crawdads gotta eat too, everything else gets a pass.

Local Mexican got charges dismissed for killing a sturgeon becuz the regs weren’t in Spanish.

Mexican is the correct term, it is where they are FROM.

Was waiting for the ice topic on Henry’s to come up. Since I never fished it prior to a couple years ago I can’t attest to before and after. I can read up and chat with biologists then draw my own conclusions. Personally this info to me is less to do with ice fisherman and more with it needing either the stocking to drop to account for increased natural spawning or encourage more harvest to balance it out. Lots of 18-20 in cuts cruising around there. Could be wrong but putting a size limit or something could be looked at. End of the day I still stick to the less stocking and more effort to preserve or restore the natural habit.

I agree with you, B. If over population is the “problem” with Henry’s (and I’m not really convinced there is a problem), then ice fishing (=more harvest) can’t be a bad thing.

I also agree that limited harvest can be a good thing as well. It all depends on the fishery.

I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about over harvest at CJ. They’ve been complaining about it for years. Last winter the perch fishing was incredible. Good size, good quantity. Yes a lot of fish were harvested, but it sure isn’t broken. It is a boom and bust fishery.

When it comes to panfish, which tend to over populate, harvest is good. Take and keep all the little ones you catch. Keep the populations in check and you’ll get larger fish. I’ve caught 3 tagged fish (perch) out of Cascade this summer and I was amazed to find out how slow perch actually grow. Fish tagged in 2009 at ~10 inches are now ~14 inches, 4 years later. That’s an inch per year for those Gigantors. I don’t know how fast they grow when they are small, but they sure grow slow once they get larger. As I understand it, pansize trout can grow up to 1" per month.😲

But, you don’t think there is more fish in Henry’s because of the extended season (ice fishing)? Which is a hit and miss with Idaho weather.

I guess I’m missing something. No, I don’t think there are more fish due to the extended season. If anything there would be less fish due to the extended season. If you want big ones, then less fish would be more likely to produce bigger fish as a general rule. Am I wrong?

LOL I am talking planting, not taking. They planted fish then opened up the water ways bringing more fish as well. Like a big bunch of fish all at once. And people not keeping them in search for the trophy.

There are daily limits and possesion limits. You can go out one day and keep a limit, then go out the next day and keep a limit and continue doing that until you reach the possesion limit. If you reach your possesion limit you cannot go back to the same water body and keep any fish until you reduce the number of fish in your possesion by consuming them. The possesion limit only applies to fish while you are in the field or in transit. Often the bag limit and possesion limit are the same, meaning that once youe reach your daily limit you’re done until you eat them. See pages 51 and 52 of the regulation booklet.

Thanks.
but this line “ **The possesion limit only applies to fish while you are in the field or in transit**.” this is what I am talking about. Behind your doors is another thing.
I read this as you can have several limits as long as they are not out in the field or on transit. And that is where the canning and storing them comes in.

So out camping you eat, if day tripping it, put them in the freezer at your home and go back next day? In other words, FIELD possession and home possession are two different things?

We are heading in another direction here and sorry Cpierce. Great topic.

Possession Limit: Maximum number of fish that may be
lawfully in possession of any person. Possession limit shall
apply to fish while in the field or being transported. All fish
that are hooked, landed, and not immediately released shall be
counted in the possession limit of the person hooking the fish.
The bag and possession limits are equal, except where listed
and for salmon and steelhead.

It is notable that once the fish is in your refridgerator or freezer at home, they are no longer considered “in possession”. So, if you live near the body of water, you could take a limit home, and then go back the next day, and catch another limit, and then again the next day, and so on. Doesn’t quite seem right does it? But is legal.

I think that is the point that some are trying to make.

So far everyone has had sound arguments. I have to admit that the IDFG has done a great job overall with the management of the wildlife in Idaho. Compared to other states they are doing fantastic, perhaps why the state attracts so many out of staters to it’s fisheries. It will never be perfect the job they must do, but give them some credit. They can’t please everyone. A large (perhaps most of the) responsibility rest on us, the fishermen. Only take what you will use, don’t be wasteful. That not only applies to fishing but to life in general.

When I was a child I wanted to keep everything I caught, it was my prize, my reward. As I got older I realized how wasteful I was because half the fish I kept would end up getting thrown away after spending too long in the freezer. I now am an active C&R guy because of my youthful negligence. I strictly C&R unless I know I will eat that fish that day, soon there after, or I know the fish is not to survive the hook up. I greatly prefer fishing for native fish on natural fisheries, but I am fine with the stocking of warm water fish on irrigation water bodies in as much as they don’t interfere with native spawning. I get that the Snake River has become a world class fishery for some bass, but that has really screwed up the native trout in a lot of the areas on the snake. 40-60 years ago I don’t think the F&G realized the adverse affects that planting fish would have on the native species in the rivers and streams. Hence the attempts to save those fisheries now. Hindsight is always 20/20. But instead of rant and rave about the problems we think we face, let us take action and do our part to help out. Unfortunately we cannot control what other people do, thats why we have enforcers of the law that can impose consequences for those who violate the law. If everyone were a little more considerate of the impact their harvest (good or bad) is having on the water they are fishing maybe we could all help each other out a little more and make sure there is enough fish for everyone and for the ecosystem. It’s tough to single any one thing out, there are many contributing factors. Let’s just focus on what we do and can control. Do our part, and hope the rest will get taken care of. I’ll get off my soap box now… 😉

Hey, it is okay with me. We sidetracked a long ways on the stocking etc issue too.

Sure we have a liberal possession limit, but I doubt if too many people load up to the point of extreme excess. Sure I imagine that some do, but it is tough to plan a family fish fry if you could only have 25 bluegills in your freezer etc. I usually only keep panfish, and even then only enough to eat within that month.

If we made all of the laws, trying to stop the extreme few then we punish all of those that don’t go to excess.

Many may still want enough to smoke or can etc. I used to make some tasty smoked fish that we canned and used on crackers etc. Usually it was fish that others don’t harvest. Everything from whitefish to carp and pike-minnows. But I even then we never had more than about a dozen half pints at a time or so. I can only speak for myself and those I know. I don’t personally know anyone that wastes fish or illegally over harvests.

Possibly even some of those minority groups that harvest more than most of us do, might not waste any of it either. To a certain extent I think that my 90% catch and release balances with a little of the full time harvest of someone else.

Sometimes too much catch and release can be damaging also when there are too many fish for the fishery to support to any size.
