A question about fly fishing

I’ve spin fished fresh water since I was a youngster. I’ve had a flyrod for the past 8 years and finally got a bit more serious about it (flyfishing) last year when I started going with a buddy from work. He gave me some pointers and lots of coaching. I’ve finally got my confidence up to the point that I’ve gone a couple times and left the spinner at home. It’s been fun, but I’ve still got loads to learn! Sure is rewarding to have one take your fly when you’ve made a great cast!

I’ll keep fishing other methods, but I made it over the hump to appreciating fly fishing.

I’ve kinda gone full circle and then some. Started with spin rod (taught by my father and very effective) then out of High school I learned flyfishing with fly rod and fished exclusively with fly rod for 10 yrs or so. Then I started having kids and started fishing for a more variety of fish(ie. tiger muskies, ice fishing for perch/crapie, bluegills again with kids, etc.) and have picked back up the spin rod for certain occasions, although I ALWAYS see what I can conjure up on a fly rod. Picking up flyfishing(especially fly tying) fueled my quest for understanding the life cycles and whole ecology around fish, even dedicated my studies in college to it. Now I like to pass on what I’ve learned with young people that have the hunger to learn like I did. When I’m not fishing with the kiddos I like to “hunt” the bigger species(salmon, steelhead, tiger muskies, etc.) on flyrod when I can but I usually have a spin rod or bait caster on hand also.
