A Jewfish between friends

This particular fishing tale unfolded during the 1995 Fishing Classic when I set off with my best friend ‘carrie’ (my two year old rottweiler) to try our luck.

We set down camp at the extreme end of the beach. I baited my hooks with whole Pilchards. It was just on dusk when I realized I had a winner and it wasn’t a Tailor.

I battled for over 2 hours before landing the biggie! A monster Jewfish on my old faithful Alvey reel.

The next day at the weigh-in I stood 10ft tall, convinced I had won the Classic. My fish weighed in at 14.6 kg. Alas my victory was to be short lived when my good friend and
worthy opponent Jim beat me at the post with his Jewfish weighing in at 14.9 kg.

What we didn’t realize at the time was that we had been fishing at opposite ends of the same beach.

We shared the victory together as we took out 1st and 2nd place in the Classic.
