Last time I out chasing Wiper the line (mono) was getting twisted up I was trolling a Rat-a-Trap anything to eliminate this? I tie a clip on the end for quick lure change.

Line can't twist unless the lure is spinning. If that snap you're using is one of those with an angled bend at the bottom, it could be riding off center enough to imbalance the lure. Snaps with a round profile are much better - and those with good quality swivels are better yet.

Add the swivel with 3' of flouro ahead of the lure for the ultimate presentation.
Have fun.

Also watch how your lure runs at the speed that you are trolling at to make sure that the lure isn't slowly rolling over. If it is then adjustments will have to be made.

And you do know the empty line method for untwisting it, right?

[#0000FF]You have gotten some good advice. Make sure your lure is running true before trolling it out behind you. Some lures run better at slower speeds and may rotate a bit if you run faster. Or, you may need to slightly change the bend of the eye with a pair of needlenose pliers if it gets bent out of position. A lot of crankbaits benefit by some "tuning"...some right out of the box.

The swivel should help...a good quality barrel swivel about 3 feet ahead of the lure. That will also help if your line twist is the result of reeling on a spinning reel while a large fish is pulling line off the drag...or reeling while you are otherwise not bringing in any line. Wipers are great at dogging it and playing a tug of war. If you keep reeling on a spinning reel at that point you will be putting twists in the line. Hooray for swivels. They don't solve all the problems but they help.

Once you have developed some serious twists, take off your lure, open your bail, run the boat at slow speed and let your line out behind the boat. After you pass the point of the twisting, click the bail, hold the line between your thumb and forefinger...ahead of the reel...and slowly wind the line back in. That will take care of most twists.

Had same issue back in the day recommend a swivel with bearings a titch more but line twist gone. We've never had any more line twist using ball bearings swivels and we troll very slow .5moh depending and up to 5MPH.

I agree with all of the advice.

I've experienced one more mode of line twist in casting and retrieving lures (much less likely trolling). Some lures occasionally hook themselves or the line when cast. I like lures that have some kind of action that I can feel through the rod upon retrieve to know to abandon the cast and just reel it in without putting time into giving it techniques and fishing it. When it hooks the line ahead of it, some lures really spin a lot upon the retrieve.

To clear out even minor twisting I run my empty lines out a couple times of year, like TD explained.
Be sure to pinch the line as he descibed and I find it super effective to point the rod straight out the back of my boat.
To save fishing time I have even been known to take a handfull of rods to a local canal or Jordan River on a non-fishing day. Just stand on a bridge and let it go.
* Just dis-regard the strange looks you may get, at least your line will be straight!
