Fished yesterday with TopH20, WyoGuy, Rowdy, and a few others and it was slow.
It was very tough fishing for perch and some of the guy's got some trout but it was my first time fishing Starvy and I still enjoyed it. The wind was constant all day and the ice was slick so beware all, fished with a bunch of great guys and had a good time. I will definitely plan on hitting this lake next year before the perch shut down. It was great to meet some new BFT members and try a new body of water even if I did get skunked
Bring on the soft water.

Thanks for the report PH, I was wondering how the guys did yesterday. It seems the catching is really slowing down, did you guys fish Indian bay?

[#0000FF][cool]Not a very nice introduction to a lake with so much potential. It can be a lot more generous. But a lot of us are disappointed in her lately.
Truth is that this is probably the latest that Starvy has been iced over for quite a few years. Some years it does not even freeze completely and most years the ice cap is gone by mid February. So we are just not used to fishing for perch that are more focused on the upcoming spawn than on feeding.
Get in touch with me after about the first of June and we can arrange a more hospitable meeting with that fantastic body of water.

We fished around Indian Bay Sunday and it almost skunked us. One trout apiece and two little perch for one guy. We never even saw much on the fishfinders. We covered about a mile and a half circle drilling holes and fishing. depth from 15 ft to 95 feet. At least it was a nice day and the ice was good.

Great meeting you again and fishing with you. If it wasn't for the rainbows I would have been skunked as well, tough day. We went over to Rabbit Gulch and gave it a try but had the same result, couldn't find the perch. The bows over there were biting so we caught a few of them. We will have to get together at Willard when it's fishable and you can show me how to catch walleyes on the Kokanee Creek spinners.

It as a pleasure to meet you and your friends on Monday. Since most ice fishermen are crazy, it's good to be crazy together. Like [#0000bf]TD[/#0000bf] mentioned, it's too bad the day you picked to give Starvation the first try ended up like fishing in the Dead Sea.
When we left Indian Bay we drove around to Rabbit Gulch and tried that until a little after 5:00 p.m.. We caught some rainbows but the perch were not anywhere we could find them. The late ice cover that is now extending ever closer to the perch spawning could be the reason the fish aren't cooperating. [#0000bf]TD[/#0000bf] mentioned this as a possibility. He may very well be on to something and it makes as much common sense as any other excuse we could come up with.
It certainly can't be that we are just not good enough to catch the yellow-barred demons. I think I'm going to punish myself one more time this season and give it a go tomorrow morning if I can find someone else just as crazy. I'd rather not go alone because it isn't a safe plan of action when late season conditions can make it less safe out there. I hope Wyoguy will join me and we will make sure the perch season is really, really, really, really over, or not.
Take care. I look forward to fishing with you again. I have to remember I have a boat. It floats on soft water and doesn't like 15 inches of ice.

My son and I made our first trip down to Starvation last Thurs. Eve. fished about 6 or 7 hrs. Friday at Juniper all around Sand Point and numerous holes back to where we parked, no luck. We were after perch so didn't target the trout, we hit Cowens for some lunch and headed down to the State Park and walked across to the far side fishing around the point from 10 feet of water to 60 feet and still didn't mark or catch any perch. Hit the lake again early the next morning this time we fished Knighten from 15 feet to 40 and only scored on a couple perch. I kind of thought the perch might be starting to spawn so that's why we tried some shallow water but we just couldn't locate any, you could catch trout in the shallower depths as we stopped and talked to a gentlemen who was fishing in about 17 feet of water and watched him pick up several nice rainbows. He was interested in the BFT site so I hope he joins the BFT bunch. He was a real nice guy, of course being from Wis. he would have to be[ ] If you happen to read this Tom, my son and I enjoyed visiting with you. I think my next trip that direction will be for my turkey in early April.[fishin]

Yes sir, we were in Indian Bay and I must have drilled 40 holes searching for the perch anywhere from 28 ft. to 55 ft., and nodda.

I would love to meet up with you and see how it's done, but it's gonna be hard to pull me off of willard at that time of year. But heck, maybe the walleye will be on at starvy as well. Thanks for the invite TD, I'll more than likely take you up on that offer, but do I have to bring my pontoon? That's not a problem either. THANKS TD

[cool][#0000FF]I like Willard in June too. But so do the power squadron nutjobs.
If you ever wanna have a 50 fish (or better) day on walleyes you need to hit Starvy for post spawn action. Yeah, a lot of seegars (dinks) but plenty of decent sized fish too...with a shot at some two-footers.
Toons recommended but not necessary. There are a few places where you can "crank the bank" in June and July with good expectation of wallie whackin'. Perch are usually a bit deeper...but not always. I have also caught some toads in less than 10 feet of water at that time of year.

[cool][#0000FF]The hardcore wallieholics start ganging up on Starvy anytime from about the middle of May. And even on weekdays you often have a lot of new best friends out over the better known spots.
Of course the boats always have the right of way...and since the proximity rule does not apply at the wakeless trolling speed for walleyes...they don't pay much attention to a fat old guy (like me) in a float tube. I have actually had them bump into me and then yell at me for being on their lake. All that while I often catch more and bigger ones than they do.
The good news is that once the toothy fishies go on the chew there are plenty of places to find them and many different techniques that will put a lot of them on the end of your line. It can take a lifetime to search out all the spots on Starvation and to develop all of the tactics that will work. I'm still working on it. The best part of getting a degree in wallieology is the lab work.

Your absolutely right TD, the power squadron is out of control. And yes having a 50 fish day would be awesome so you better count me in. The only problem I have is that I don't have an electric for my pontoon so I'll probably have to bring the boat ok.

[#0000FF][cool]Whatever boats yer float...errr whatever. Boats are legal and a better way to be able to cover more water to find the fish. But there are some places where just a plain ol' float tube will reach all the fish you need.
Something for everybody on Starvation.
I will even be okay with getting in the boat with you to show you a thing or two. I ain't proud.
