Lower Salt
#1
Hey folks,
so I just found the Lower Salt River over by PIR, its like 8 miles from my house. Does anyone fish there that could maybe give me some tips. I like to fish cats, bluegill, sunfish and talipia.

That area is super close to my house as well. I've heard that area does contain fish, the usual slew of hot desert loving types (tilapia/carp/bass/catfish). I definitely wouldn't hesitate to drown some chicken liver/corn for the bottom feeders. I'd try topwaters or shallow divers for the bass, the water has to be shallow there.

DO NOT EAT THE FISH. I would even wash my tackle and gear after fishing in that water. It's downstream from the sewage plant and there has been a no eat advisory for any fish in that water for a long time.

Roger that DO NOT EAT THE FISH. Where exactly upstream is the sewage plant. Is it close enough to get out in front and keep fish... or better yet any spots close by where i could go and keep some? Thanks or the advisory advice also.

I'm not entirely sure of the location but I do know the Tres Rios Management area upstream was designed to try to let natural marshlands filter out all the chemicals and pollutants from the treatment facilities. Personally I'd rather fish at the community ponds, same types of catches in semi-clean water. Lake Pleasant isn't too far either.

From AZGF: Oct 2012
Location: The Salt and Gila River from 59th Avenue down to and including the Painted Rocks Borrow Pit Lake, and the lower portion of the Hassayampa River Maricopa County
Pollutant & Source: DDT metabolites, toxaphene, dieldrin and chlordane pesticide Contaminated due to the historic use of these banned pesticides
Advisory: Do not consume fish and other aquatic organisms

You stumbled on to the right place. I fish there all the time and cats, bluegill, sunfish and tilapia is what we usually catch plus more my brother caught himself a flathead there off a worm and its also a great place for bass. You'll be surprised some of the other crazy fish you catch there I keep catching what I think are Texas cichlids but I am not to sure yet if that's exactly what they are. Liver and cut bait works great there for catfish the biggest I have caught there so far was a 12lb catfish and for the tilapia and sunfish they love worms. If you like to catch carp there is a lot in that water system as well. If you do decide to go fish there and park of Avondale rd next to PIR you can walk down the old road that used to be there but when you get to the river its best to follow the river west going under the bridge that's were you'll find the better fishing spots since it usually gets a little crowded next to the old road. Anyways check it out let me know how it goes good luck.
