I've fished strawberry for years and know its a morning bite lake. I might go there this afternoon. Does anyone have any advice/tactics for afternoon/evening fishing? Thanks!

Go and have fun. While I agree that it is an early bite lake, you can still have some success in the PM. Often, it seems that you need to actively jig a bit more to bring fish in when fishing the afternoon.

I'm like you, have always had my best luck at first light. we're usually out of there around noon, and have never waited to see if it picks up in the late afternoon. that being said, once the bite starts to slow, i move around trying to find willing fish. Also, will take a couple poles rigged differently to entice a bite or two. Sometimes it seems that subtle changes can make a difference between catching, or not. I'm curious to see how you do, let us know. one thing is for sure, you wont catch em from the couch!

I have to say that I simply don't buy the "morning bite" theory. I have caught fish during every hour of the day, and I can honestly say, IMHO, that there isn't a "best time". My brother and I slaughtered Cutties on the Berry about a month ago from 3:00pm to 6:00pm -- easily the best day I've ever had on that lake, and I've been fishing it for 20 years. I love pulling into my favorite place to find all the cars either gone or in the process of leaving -- more water for me.
I'm sure there is some sort of scientific explanation to back up the whole "early bite" thing, just like there is probably something to the whole "lunar bite" -- but I'm just not seeing it. Then again, I don't mind fishing 15 hours straight without a bite -- it's still amazing just to be able to get out and enjoy the clean air and beautiful scenery. [signature]

I'm not very exerienced with Strawberry when compared to many others on here, but . . . my best day on the ice at Strawberry was from 2:30pm until dark. Almost every single drop was a bite. Nearly notstop hits from both cuts and rainbows. Most of the time didn't bother with a second pole for either my wife or I as it was all we could do to keep up with one pole each.
So, while it may be better in the AM, it doesn't mean there are not some incredible afternoon/evening bites. [signature]

I've fished it a number of times in the evening, mainly by Haw's Point. Some of my best days through the ice on Strawberry have been in the evening before sun down.

Well - it was slow and we only iced 1 fish. Graphed about 10 or so in 3 hrs (moved once). Missed 3, tried a little bit of everything with usual Berry baits, jigs, etc.
As mentioned above - still better than the couch! Fished in 22' and 26' - ice was 4-5" with slush everywhere that people had been fishing. You pop a hole and it just pours water onto the ice! [signature] |
