And at least this time they weren't the furry feline kind. Got MORE than enough of those!
Launched the river and headed upstream. Had a few spots I wanted to poke into. I was on the water by 2, and warm it was.
Got to a nice little nook and pitched into some swirls, but no go. Moved deeper into shallows, and got some tugs. Probably mudcats - missed a few hookups, then started to land some mudcats, a bitty bass, and some bluegill or sunfish - sometimes I have a hard time telling. No crappie, though I was hoping.

Few slurps here, there, and beyond. So I hopped out of the boat bow in hand, and found some pods of bugelmouths having a love fest. And - - - I missed them all!!! Hard to believe! Maybe I'm shooting TOO low! They kept coming back, so I kept the bow handy.
Pitched more blade-rigs, and wham - had a good hard hit. Zoom - off went line as this beast stripped and ran. Thought - geez - I've hooked one of them big ugly carp. Kept trying to get a good look - dark dorsal, hmmm - NOT scaly! Yo - it's a burly channel! And here I am, shorebound, no net, little hope.
Worked the hog till she tuckered out pretty good, then dragged 'er over a log to safety.

Out come the sign, tape, camera. My best this year - 27", 7.5 lb. longest cat, But it ain't over yet!

Moved along and up another nook that held more playful panfish. Several little dinkers came toying with me, then I get some bigger tugs on the sunfish drag setting. Wirr - reset to kitty level. Surprise cookie - just a teen.

One side I'm getting kitties and sunfish, the other side - mudcats galore, and carp. Stupid mudcats were relentless. Dinks!
Nice end to a long week, and hopefully the start of a good weekend.

Those are some pretty bluegills you have there.
Yeah if I have to admit it that is a pretty good sized channel also.
Sounds better than the day that I am having.
I'm still at work.

Great post CYS...glad to see a mod on here that gets out and fishes, then posts about it[ ]
The day you get skunked....you will be looking back on days like this one...wondering how you even hooked into a fish!
Thanks for posting CYS. Keep the posts coming!

Yep, what you have there are some pretty bluegill. And good on ya for catching that nice cat. You had much better success than we did - just two fish on our little venture. I am heading back out in a few hours to get into some deeper holes. We will see what that brings for me.

Nice cat that will help out the north! What part of the river did you fish? not asking for you to give away any exact spots just wondering where you accessed it?

The river she was kind to me last night, so drew me back for another visit.
I swear - never fails, you tell one or two buddies about a place, next thing your know some hot-spotting lurker is at your spot when you arrive. Probably the one responsible for all that danged trash too! I blame BFT!
[inline "Hotspotting Lurker.jpg"]
The bite was - well, not so hot. Got into about a dozen tweener cookies. Nabbed a couple chunky ones on a stringer.
No bass today, but did catch BOTH bluegill and sunfish - so was able to do a side-by-side compare. Some of the gills I find on the river system are so pale compared with say the deep dark colors on Mantua. Maybe that's part spawn patterns, part murky water vs clear vegetated environments. I swear some of the gills seemed almost pink. Bama boy can attest to that. Maybe that's an "ice-off" thing.
[inline "Side by Side.jpg"]
So after working up and down, then down and up the river - I come back to collect up my gear, and . . . . um- no stringer. Seems my rock's been rolled away - so somewhere's out there are two young chunky channels working their way down the railway like the Soggy Bottom Boys. . . . grrr.

Did you miss the Mod vs Mod Willard report? My first Walleye - a proud bucketlist moment! (plus it was bigger than my son's! bwahahaha)
I still like to report when I've been out fishing. But - I've probably learned NOT to report the skunk trips, doesn't help one's reputation!!! XD
I'll still post up widdle fish sometimes, if it counts towards a species list for the day "size matters not" - as Yoda might say!
I know you guys like those sunfish. I can find loads of dinks, just don't know where their mammas and pappas are hanging out!

I don't know if that was you we talked with last night or not. Were you with a younger kid heading home around midnight-ish?

Go print your sign dude. Slap some fat cats on it for us!
Nice that ya'll are crossing paths. I can usually spot Bama by his BFT flag in the marsh! haha
I'm thinkin' either a night time trip up to the dam, or along the river is in store. Night time can get kinda freaky, so the more the merrier... another floatilla adventure?
Lotsa places to get lost out there. [blush]

So I've never fished much after dark is it better with the moon or without? Not saying I'm chicken but seems easier with a little light. Freaks me out how water sucks up all light at night unless your close enough to shore the lights don't help much. Sounds fun though if the bugs will leave ya alone. Later J
