Hey guys, I went on alligator gar guide on Tuesday and I had one of best times of my life. We started fishing in the trinity river in texas at 7:00 and within seven minutes we had our first bite. And our guide told us to let them swim with the bait and up stream and when they stop or if they turn to swim down stream you set the hook. We were using saltwater rods and reels and maybe 5/0 treble hooks and the bait we were using was a big piece of shad and carp buffulo and carp heads. And now back to my story the gar started to swim upstream and then it turns and starts to swim down stream and that's when you set the hook and that is when the fun begins. Right when I set the hook it felt big and it started to thrash around. It took me about 5 minutes to bring the gar to the boat and it was four feet long and maybe forty pounds. We fished until 5:00 and we caught about 10 alligator gar the biggest one was 60 inches long and weighted 60 pounds, but that's small compared to what they can get to. Nexted year I'm planning to go again but this time I what to get one over 100 pounds. If you are ever in texas and you want to catch a fish of a life time to garzillabowfishing.com. And I'm planning to go blue catfishing this weekend. Thanks

That's pretty sweet bud. I've got into them in FL and TX and they are like carp on steroids. Besides the fact that you are reeling in an armor plated dinosaur they can pull like a freight train.

I wish I was back there. Couldn't get the alligator gars but got the longnose and spotted gars that were only 2 lbs each. Its exciting to see these huge gars breaking the water - you can see their back fins. Congrads!!!

Super cool and a great story. I bet they're fun to fight. Do they act aggressive while your landing them?

Yes they thrash around and our guide told us one man was trying to pull the hook out and the fish thrashed out and its head slamed into his wrist and broke his wrist. But they don't try to bite when they do its on accident.

When I lived in northern Louisiana, we would occasionally go watch guys fishing for alligator gar in a canal. They used heavy spinning gear and on the end of their line, they put a 18" length of frayed nylon rope. The fishermen would work that rope like a streamer and when the fish hit, their teeth would get tangled in the nylon strands and they couldn't get loose. No hooks on their lines, just the frayed rope. Strangest fishing I ever witnessed.

The frayed nylon rope is used mainly for Long Nose Gar, the other major species. They are much smaller and more plentiful. Alligator Gar are becoming rare over parts of their range and are even protected, you can catch em, but you have to release em unharmed. It looks like you can keep em in Texas.

I'll bet the freak bros from SwampPeople could tell ya how to fix 'em up good. Heheheheheh. Goes great with squirrel! Heheheheheeeh.
They got some serious teeth - to rival a Musky, no?
Isn't it in some places where they weren't meant to be they're a mandatory kill, bowfishing - kinda like carp. But other places aren't they protected? Or maybe I'm getting mixed up with Paddlefish.
Joe - put one of those on your bucket list while you're chasing Gar!!!
Carp head - rolly, polly carpheads! Hmmm - oughta try that! See what the big kitties think!!!

I caught one when I was 12 in Virginia. Meanest fish I ever landed. Careful around their teeth, my buddy got his hand cut up pretty good. This one was about 3.5 ft long and fought for a good half hour.
