honestly if it was me, I would spend more now so you get a better quality reel that will last longer than a $50 reel. Since i fish a lot i used to go through a reel often, i stepped up in quality and the reel lasts much longer. I would buy a shimano symetre. i have had just about every reel and this reel has held up to a lot of abuse. great reel great price and will last a long time if "you take care of it"....
just my opinion.

My grandfather and father swore by the Mitchell 300 reels and I own a pair of the gold version. I think they are right around $45.
So I have to ask the experts here; what kind of maintenance do you do, if any, on your spinning reels? Do I need to routinely grease or oil bearings?

for the one i use the most i will be going higher end, proably shimano. but my 2nd, or "backup/smaller" reel i don't want to spend as much on. thats why im in the $50 or less range......

my shimano reel that i have now is one that is dying. its a mid range priced, i think it was about $60-70 new three years ago, and its been a good reel but the bail closure mechanism is shot. i havent had that happen on the higher end shimanos but on every cheaper one ive used thats where it has gone wrong first....that is actually what s wrong with both the ones i need to replace. my other reel is one that came from austraila 10 or more years ago. rainbow is the brand and itss been the best reel ive ever had. i dont know that they are still made cuz i cant find them in any web search.

wildcat is right. For just about 50 bucks, Pflueger has one of the best reel bargins out there. The thing has 10 bearings and is just a joy to use and comes in a bunch of different sizes. Worth a look.

Pflueger President is a great reel in that area might be a bit more than 50 though.

pretty sure that those bail springs can be replaced.
For sure buy a new reel, just because...
But I would also look into getting the 2 you have repaired or just getting the parts and doing it yourself. Probably cost less than $10 to fix both if you do it yourself.
Then you have 2 "spares" on the shelf.

I usually fish with shimano and daiwa. But I noticed pflueger is making some nice looking reel. Pflueger reel is probably the best bang for your bucks.

I own an old quantum spinning reel that just kicked the bucket. It was an energy series reel and it lasted about 15 years. That was my go to spinning reel. Back then I paid about 80 bucks for it. I then bought a pflueger president (10 bearings) and for the money as recommeded by the salesperson at Cabela's since I was looking to buy a PT series spinning reel. The pflueger is a really good reel for the money.
