My son lives near Ft Lauderdale Florida so I spent a week there fishing every day. Tropical climate, had a bunch of lizards in the back yard as well as frogs.
I fished the piers, under bridges, off the jetty, along the banks of the canals. FISH WERE EVERYWHERE! I mainly fished for reef fish, not the big ones. I went out on a boat and only got a remora. See pic. The biggest fish were at the pier but most fisherman walked away empty handed. I saw very few large fish being taken from there and in general. We went to Isamadora down the southern keys and seen 20 - 100 lb tarpon being fed at the boat docks eating the scraps after the fish have been cleaned. I caught a wierd looking crab and an octopus as well. I mostly used my ice fishing pole and 8 lb line. I ended up catching more than anyone I had seen and used a size 8 hook.
I was under the impression that the snappers were larger than a foot, but not the case. You never know what your going to get.
Take a look at the remora pick stuck on the ceiling.
The guy next to me caught the 3 foot barracuda. It looks like it weighed 10 lbs. I saw 2 other barracudas about 3-4 feet long during that week.

Sounds like a great time i miss Florida. I went there last september. Try to catch barracudas but they are smart only to eat my mullets up to the head XD. I still wonder what kind of fish at nigh that was huge on the end of the line coming up this 10 ft+ concrete wall that haunts me every day it was huge >_< "line snaps" worst fishing day ever
those were the fishes i caught and many mullets with my cast net and some other fishes as well that i dont know the names of them at all lol. Sorda hard to catch fish when it was first time surf fishing.

Huge fish at night = shark. Frequently the fin will abrade the line 3-6 ft up from the hook if you don't have a shock leader attached. Other times they just snap it.

The last hour I was there, I tried the cast net. I need a lot of practise. Didn't see any mullets. Next time, I'm going to concentrate more on the beach fishing.

Ya cast netting is hard at first but if u have the right person to show u u will catch like 5-20+ mullets at once. Ya I was fishing west palm beach by the Marriotts hotel and there a water pump there and that's where I caught mullets. The barracudas are nice size there and like to eat your mullets along the rocky area.

Sounds like a great trip, I love ocean fishing. Last time I was in Florida I was down in the keys, just waded in and started casting, I was killing the Spanish Mackerel and small Baracuda's on my 8 wt. fly rod and shrimp patterns. Heading down in Sept. and will be fishiing Estero Bay for some redfish and sea trout.

Maybe it was a big ole jack. Craziest thing I've seen is catching 40 lb jacks on a short hand line (12 ft/80lb test) with a shrimp at dock. That was a battle.
Don't even get me started on kayak fishing trips in the Keys and the Glades.
I think when I retire I'll split my time between Florida in the winter and Alaska in the summer.
