Macinaw Migrations at the Gorge?
#1
[#000000]I don't get up to the Gorge to mac fish nearly as much as I would like to. And as such, I am not sure when and where the lakers hang out in the "big water" areas (Swim Beach, Antelope, and Linwood) during the different times of the summer fishing season. As I understand it, early season mac concentrations are typically in the Swim Beach area. Then mid-summer they "generally" move to the Antelope flats area. Then later (especially during the spawn), they are best found in the Linwood area. [/#000000]

[#000000]I am not at all very certain about the above. Which is the reason for this post. Could/would anyone be willing to set me straight on the "general" areas to find mackinaw on the Gorge at the various times of the soft-water season?[/#000000]

They're in all three right now Ralph. That whole area is not really "migratory," but those are known holding areas. They roam all three areas regularly, although Linwood gets more fish as the season progresses and is fairly sparse in the spring and early summer. The real migration is that quite a few fish move from the north (Buckboard/Holmes) to the south beginning at ice-out and continuing into fall. Then, after spawning in Linwood, they swim back north again before freeze-up. However, there are always macks on certain humps from Holmes to the dam all year. Some simply don't migrate, or follow the north-south pattern. I catch fish in all three areas (Linwood, Swim, and Antelope) every month of the year, including the dead of winter.

Hard to add anything to what Jim offered. I was out there Monday and Tuesday this week and found the best fishin' for the Macks at Antelope. Couldn't find much at all on the humps in Linwood or in the red narrows near the Boars Tusk and I did not get over to Swim. Seems like in years past they were a little more abundant in Linwood at this time of the year than they are this year. I bet they will start to stack up there a little later this month.

I know Jim is on a first-name basis with most of the bigger Macks out there and I yield to his observations. Purty out there. Wish it wasn't so darn far away so I could hit it every week. Those days out there when the water is glass calm, a little nip in the air, and lots of big red check marks on the finder are hard to beat. Gotta go again soon.
