K so I had a monster break me off at utah lake...since I had him on for over a minute I am 100% sure it was not a carp, it was too vigorous a fighter going one way then the other quickly...it was peeling line like no other and i made the mistake of tightening the drag a bit too far after fighting it a minute, at that point it instantly snapped my 12 lb fluorocarbon line...when it hit, it almost pulled me in the water from the shore and about doubled my pole over....it hit a spinner bait (white bass pattern)

With how dirty that water is you will likely not ever know what type of fish that was. The Biggest LMB of my life peeled line like that, and took my gear for ride around the pond like a beaver tail gone mad. Even the smaller LMB's take the line for a ride. However, did the fish jump, tail walk or breach? If not I doubt it was a LMB. I was using a spinner in the reeds once looking for LMB's and had what felt like a huge snag. I fought the fish and until it broke the line (10 lbs test). It never breached, it never swam toward me and it for sure did not snag itself on the reeds. I have heard about Channel Catfish taking spinners but I have yet to get one in on that type of rig. What type of terrain were you fishing? Rocky, weedy, sandy ect.....

I've caught a lot of big kittie at UL. And yep, some could spool a reel, but usually not quickly.
The one fish I've tangle with at UL that was zipping back and forth at high speed,, and screaming line off my reel spool,, was a big sucker.. It bit a 3" Mr.Twister.

My guess is big cat. Probably a really big cat. I've caught some 10 pounders this year on 6lb line and not gotten broke off. I can only imagine what it would take to break 12. My friend and I were just talking about how the cats are pulling really hard at UL right now... water temp or something...??? I wouldn't put it past a cat to hit a spinner bait. I've caught them on jigs, cranks, and bare hooks (twice on bare hooks believe it or not). Don't ask why I was fishing with a bare hook.

MY guess - 1) A snagged big carp. Carp don't go after spinner baits, but, ----------------- if you snagged one in the fin or especially the tail, look out, ----------, you're off to the races. [shocked] 2) Big kitties are known to occasionally hit spinners, especially slow retrieved but normally, and I emphasize, normally, they will head for the reeds, cattails, etc. and wrap up. Don't know what was around you or where you were, but I'm guess 1). Every big bucket mouth I've hooked has come to the surface some time in the fight, especially at the beginning, and tried to shake the hook. Sucker, ----- naw, they fight deep and hunker down to tough it out. Not that active, just tough logs that swim w/o you're ability to stop em..
You need to get a tube so you can cover more area, control the big guys better, have a close encounter with the water and stay cool, get more exercise, and it's cheap, not like those 50k bass boats and someone crowding ya out of your spot.!!!!! [ ]

I believe it was a catfish or a carp. But honestly I cannot believe even a 20 pound channel cat could break 12 pound flourocarbon. That fluorocarbon, in 10 pound class, can just about pull in a silver salmon in the 12 pound range. And not to knock on Utah fish but there are not alot of fish that can do that. The conditions can certainly tear you up, but Utah lake and it' s associated beaches are not known for a lot of treacherous conditions. I am not denying it was a good fish, but sounds more like bad luck..... Or the state record cat just wanted some jewelry for his lip. The foul hooked carp has some credence to the way it was fighting as well. Sounds like a lot of fun though!

My vote is a cat. I have caught both on a fly and Carp fight hard, but the Cat took me all over the place.

The foul hooked carp is a good point. They do make your reel sing, but the more I thought about, I'm not so sure. Correct me if I'm wrong ( I'm going off of memory), but aren't the hooks on spinnerbaits facing upwards. By design, they are supposed to be weedless and not catch on anything unless they bite it. I suppose they could snag a fish from underneath, but I think the blades would divert the lure away from the fish. My guess is whatever broke you off bit it and took you under a sharp rock. The world may never know.

There are a lot of carp, if not most that swim in pods on or close to the surface, slurping whatever, that if you reeled thru em, you could very well get hooked up.[ ]
I have on many occasions retrieved my rig with big ol carp scales imbedded. To bad you weren't able to retrieve some evidence with a break off.

Don't ever under estimate a carp. Bass will not run off a lot of line and a cat will find something to run into and snag you up. A carp will slug it out 'till the end like no other fish. They are big and strong and will eat a spinnerbait or crankbait or jig or plastic worm or just about anything a bass will eat. The funny thing is, they're not nearly as dumb as a bass so you don't catch them that often on bass baits. Although they are a sucker for chewed up Fritto's.

My guess is it was a cat. I have caught a cat on a spinner. It was a Mepps minnow spinner. If you run a spinner in front of a cat, they will suck it in. One other option as far as the break-off is that your line might have broke at the knot. I use 20 & 30 pound mono and where I loose a fish is at the knot on my leader.

My money is on a huge carp they gobble up those spinners .They will abuse you if you have less than 20 lb test and even then you have to chase them .
