After almost closing the deal on a nice gobbler yesterday morning I decided to give the birds a few days off to settle down. Instead of hunting the rest of the day I took my family to UL state park in the afternoon for some fried chicken and fishing. This was only my second time fishing UL, but I was thinking that it should be about time for the white bass to be doing their thing. We fished the river for a little while with no luck, then fished in the harbor for a little while. I saw one surprised guy catch a very decent walleye from the docks. I saw one person catch a white bass, and my little girl hooked into a little crappie. She was very excited and gobbled it up for dinner last night. Other than that it seemed to be pretty slow, but my little girl and I had a great time sitting in the sun and talking. That's really what its about, but it would be nice to catch a few more fish.
I was hoping that some of you UL veterans might chime in and help me figure out what is going on with the white bass spawn. I know that it has been unseasonably cold and that probably has slowed things down a little. I've heard people talk about catching them on every cast on anything you throw at them this time of year. How much of this is hyperbole, and how much depends on the year. What do you guys think?
