What length Minn Kota? Outcast IR10
#1
Hi there - just picked up a new Outcast IR-10 pontoon and ordered a Minn Kota Endura C2 30 motor with a 30" shaft. After mounting the motor on the transom mount, the handle hits the back of the seat.

Should I go with a 36" shaft on this pontoon?

Thanks!

I am a noob with pontoons so just trying to get it set up right!

Thanks.

Where does the prop sit in the water? I would have gone with the 36" shaft myself but the 30 might work depending upon how low the prop sits.

Any chance you can exchange it? You say it hits the back of your chair, if you steer with you feet it shouldn't matter, but could be rough turning it on and off and changing speeds.

The 36" is nice.

I will check out where it sits later today and post back. Returning it may be tough unless there is some easy way to remove the click on handle.

I was wondering whether the height is adjustable or not on the tiller handle. Can't wait to get the pontoon out!

Last step after this is to install a 50 amp circuit breaker and figure a mount for my battery.

Not sure what you mean by this.

This is the same design as the older Dave Scadden Expeditions and everyone I know that had one were using that very Minn Kota. It should work fine

It has High adjustment too. You will want to be PULLED. Loosen the bolt that holds the head of the motor and turn the head so it is facing the same direction as the prop. Then carefully put the bolt back in (by careful I mean, make sure all wires are clear)
The one I had/have is five speed forward and three reverse. By turning the head you have the forward speeds to pull you while you fish and the reverse to adjust a spot or even come into shore.
These boats do not steer well, so I have never found pushing the boat to be very effective.

I still have one and I do use it, however, I pulled the head off and added wire tape and a Radio Shack control box.

As far as battery box, did that as well:

Thanks for the pics. That helps.

Attached are some pics of the motor mounted.

From the bottom of the transom metal mount to the middle of the propeller is 19" and I can lower the propeller another 2.5 inches if I need to do so.

After pulling it up on the box and dropping the engine down, I realized it was not hitting the seat anymore so that is not an issue. Now just need to figure out if the length is long enough.

Thanks for the photos of the circuit breaker mount. What sort of receptacles are those on the breaker? I see one wire going to the breaker from the battery but two receptacles on the other side. What goes into those? (Sorry - not great at the wiring front as having not hooked up the motor yet...[crazy]

Can you guys see the photos I uploaded? I cannot - uploaded them as inline attachments but they don't show up when I view the post. Is there a size limit?

[cool][#0000ff]I edited your post so the pics would show. Don't click the "inline" box if you want them to show at the bottom of the post. If you click the inline then you have to go through the steps to get the pics to show in the main post.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Looks like you have plenty of depth on the motor and could probably raise it a bit. Be sure the propeller clears both pontoons.[/#0000ff]

Thanks for the help on the pics. Are there instructions somewhere on how to post inline if I want to do that sometime? (link?)

Thanks!

The connector on the side for the motor is an Anderson Connector sold at Granger
The wire running across the top is for my sonar and has a Deutsch connector

Plus an inline fuse.

You could use any kind of connectors, even wall plug ins.

And your motor is fine, except, turn the head so the Prop is facing the same way as the handle. Seriously, it works much better and draws less power pulling than pushing.

I agree with FG on turning the head of the motor around. It does work better. MaDfisher55 tried to run it without turning around the head. I was doing circles around him while he struggled to even move his craft. Your motor will do fine for your boat. Plenty of space for it to raise and lower if necessary.

I also think your a little deep with the motor but you can easily play with the depth that works best for you. Another thing is you will probably need to move the seat forward to get the balance right.
One thing I don't understand is why Outcast is putting a net for a back rack? If that were my boat I would go get some diamond plate and make a good back rack for it. Ron

FG, the wall plug in's are not rated for 50 amp. While I doubt it would be a problem I quite using a wall light switch for an off on because of this issue. I like that conector you have. Are you using a 50 amp breaker? I didn't put one on mine so far I have not heard of anyone using one. Ron

Right you are Ron. They can over heat and melt. I saw a motor recently however that did have a plug in like a power cord.

Do you use the breakers? I was told by a boat shop here that our boats were too light to worry about breakers. Any truth to that? Ron

No, I don't use them. I have the inline fuse on the wires going to my sonar and that is it.

That is what I am using as well. Ron

I completely agree with your comment on the net. I already have a metal fabricator guy I know creating a steel deck that will sit on tiop of and lash to the frame so I can seat the battery on top and tie it down.

Will I ge ok with an open steel frame like this or should I top it with aluminum or plastic to avoid water splash?

Thanks for the advice!

I would try to get it made out of Aluminum diamond plate. I would try to make it as big as you can. Steel will be a rusty mess and heavy.
