My wife's father was raised in Arkansas and she wants to visit the state.
We have never been there. We take a
"cheap" trip every summer to get a break from the Florida heat.
I can pick the time to go, but it has to be between July 1st and Sept 15th.
When and where would you go to catch trout?
I don't care to just drive around looking at things with my wife for 4 days! :-)

Mountain Home, AR is a nice area. The White River and Norfolk river are both within a few miles and they have great trout, striped bass, Smallmouth Bass, and panfish fishing.
Also the Greers Ferry Lake and Little Red River Region one of the few places in the country where it’s possible to fish for largemouth bass, white bass hybrids, walleye and trout all in the same day
As for time of year I would suggest as early in the summer or late in the summer as possible. The best time would probably be middle to late September in my opinion. It gets pretty hot and humid in Late July and August here.
I also suggest you visit a local flyfishing shop or baitshop and ask some of the customers or the owner how the fishing is at the time and what the trout are hitting. That will definately increase your chances of catching some great trout.
Also be sure to get an 2011 Arkansas Fishing Guidebook (Official) and check the regulations on trout and any other species you might be fishing for. Arkansas has "Zones" for certain species with special length and daily limits. So be sure to know the regulations for the area you choose to fish.
Just for your general information:
Greers Ferry Lake holds world records for Walleye (22 lb 11oz) and Hybrid Striped Bass (27 lb 5 oz). The Little Red River tail water, which feeds into Greers Ferry Lake, holds the current world-record for German Brown Trout (40 lb 4 oz).
