Foggy Deer Creek 10-18-10
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Got a lot of places to hit in the next month or two but thought I might go back to Deer Creek this morning...to see if I could score another 6 species "super slime". Got all but the crappie. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]At 7:30 AM it was getting light, at the Island ramp, but myself and a couple of boats were sticking to the ramp cause we couldn't see more than about 20 feet in the fog. I lived in southern Cal and have been in plenty of fog...but that was deerickulous.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I launched and hugged the shoreline, going north, until I hit the Island and then worked out to the end where I wanted to start fishing anyway. But it was wierd in the twilight and fog. I could hear the traffic whizzing by on the nearby highway but the fog distorted the sound and it seemed to be coming from every direction. Maybe that was also because I caught myself kicking in circles a couple of times.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Through the use of finely tuned hearing, dead reckoning (at least badly wounded), watching sonar and blind (and how) luck, I finally was able to see a dim outline of the Island shoreline and followed it out to the end. I heard no boat motors so I felt I was safe...at least from boats. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Found the first marks on sonar around the 20 to 22 foot zone. Them marks was hordes of smallmouth and largemouths...nothing very big...but they were aggressive. Probably caught a dozen of each before I could get out of them. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Worked into the area where I caught the crappie last week and saw some blippos. BOINK....ZING. Crappie? Nope. Slimer. First one jumped and got off. Gee...too bad. Worked my finesse ice fishing jigs (Flat Rinkees) high and low through several fishy marked areas. A few more slimers...mostly newly planted "finless Freddies". Nary a slab crappie in the bunch.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Decided to work the line along the "perch zone" where I had found some fish last week. Scored about a dozen perch...some in the 10 - 11 inch range..."underfooters". Kept a couple for din din.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]And thennnnnn....one of those perchies turned out to be a wee wallie. Not quite 9 AM and I already had a 5 species super slime. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The sun burned through the fog about 10ish. Sure was purty as the lingering wisps of fog/clouds hung over the water and formed a ballerina gown of sorts around Timpanogos. I never tire of watching that mountain wake up in the morning.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Went back to the "crappie rocks" but got nothing but a few more bassettes. Worked out to the perch zone and found more willing perch there too. But I have ever been guilty of leaving feeding fish to go find others. Did that again today and only got a couple more dink slimers who didn't realize the jigs I was using were not meant for them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Motored back into the ramp about noonish. BFTer Perchinski was working the area and motored over in his boat to say howdy. I gave him the 411 on the perch zone and when I left a little later it looked like his boat was working the right spot.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Tough fishing today but I was happy to score a few fish in each category except the solo wallie. I kept him, a smallie and three perch for a "captain's platter"...TD style. Some of the flattest water I have ever fished on Deer Creek. It was a mirror when I left.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]By the way, for those who like to shore fish from the Island...it is now a peninsula, with decent foot access. Several bank tanglers there today but I did not see them catch anything. You can see the dry walkway between the bank and the island in the picture I took of Perchinski.[/#0000ff]

Thanx for the info re:the perch holed up SW of the Island. Got my share, but only 1-in-10 an 11"er. Tried that wall south of the Island where the DWR gillnetted all those 'eyes exactly one week ago. Worked it over pretty good out to 65'. Except for a green sunfish at 20', nada. Motored down the east side of Charleston to see what's what at low tide. Came back and your perch were still hitting at 3pm when I left. Barely a ripple on this bluebird shortsleeved day.

[cool][#0000ff]The only thing preventing the perch from being more numerous is time and food. They have only been in there a short time and there is a lot of competition for the small amount of forage there is. Too many mouths and not enough groceries.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I almost always tip my jigs for perch and walleye. Plain old crawlers usually work well and that is what I got most of the fish on today. But I also brought along a few of the new mini minnows I just harvested and caught a smallie and a couple of perch on them. Didn't fish them very much but the fish like them. Actually, one of the best "sweeteners" for perch is a small strip of fresh perch meat...or a freshly harvested perch eyeball.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The hard part is finding the fish and then figuring out what they want on the menu for the day.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Glad you found my "kids". Just like last winter. Gotta work your way through the dinks to find a few eaters. But I think you will agree that even dink perch are better than the smell of skunk.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Too bad the wallies didn't hang around in the netting zone. But, can you blame them?[/#0000ff]

Those multi species are fun! Those are some nice looking fish....although I think the other fish might make fun of the trout's tail.

[cool][#0000ff]Catalina runs? Now there are some memories. Used to be partners with a guy on a 25' twinscrew that screamed. We would clear Newport on a blank wall foggy morning, set a heading to the Isthmus and slam the throttles forward...hoping we never heard a crash or went airborne after running over a whale. I think I started getting my grey hair then.[/#0000ff]

Wow TD, that sounds assome. What happened to that life? Is there anything you haven't done when it comes to fishing? Who are you?

"Who are you?"

[cool][#0000ff]Just a crotchety old dude who has had the good fortune to have lived in, worked in or traveled to a lot of places with water and fish. I have been passionate about fishing in all forms since I was old enough to hold a pole and put a worm on a hook. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Over the years I have not only spent all the time I could on the water, but I have invested heavily in my personal education...books, videos, internet research, etc. I don't quite have a pornographic memory but I do all right for someone my age. It helps to develop a mental database that you can rely on to help solve fishing problems and figure out the daily patterns. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]My natural curiosity, a bit of creativity and some developed skills have enabled me to learn how to tie flies, make lots of different kinds of lures, build rods...and how to use them to catch fish on more trips than not. I know and appreciate the difference between art and science...and try to use both to my advantage.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I am properly grateful for all of the kindness and assistance I have received from others along the way. These days I try to "pay it forward" whenever I can by helping others climb the learning curve a bit faster than I did.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I ain't nobody special but I enjoy being me.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]A lot of our trips combined diving and fishing. Those orange "baldys" were a pretty nuisance while trying to find a few bugs or abalones. They got no fear. Too bad the big calicos weren't so friendly.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Not sure I would wanna make that run in an open bow craft...especially in any kind of chop. Heck, there were times we turned around even with the super seaworthy craft we had. We took plenty of foolish chances but none that were guaranteed to put us on the late news. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Made the trip back to the mainland in following 15 to 20 foot seas one time. A major onshore blow came up while we were frolicing on the lee side of the island. Once we got out in the channel it was like surfing. Sure glad we weren't trying to make headway against those swells. Put some permanent fingerprints on the rails that time. Lots of pucker.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I'm still workin' on building the database. By the time I get around to downloading they will be downloading my worn out old carcass into wormville.[/#0000ff]
