I went to the coast with my friends and we were fishing on the pier. I saw alot of people holding there rod down pointing at the water and they would reel and jerk it really fast. What were they doing?

by reeling in and jerking your rod tip back and forth it gives your lure action which makes it look more real.

It's called Jigging. They will have a lure on the other end. Like a diamond jig.
