float tube electronics
#1
I am looking for a color sonar unit for my float tube. I hear so many different things to look for and by the time I look it up I find out it either isn't powerfull enough, to small a cone, or to small a screen size. Anyone have recommendations on what is the new unit on the market?

I don't have color but I just put a Humminbird 565 on my toon. The new model similar is the 570. This is a dual cone. I think the color sonars are a little overrated. Up unitl this time I have used a fishin buddy that I purchased about 10 years ago. This is a nice upgrade and I know my son will enjoy getting the use out of the fishin buddy as he learns how to use it. Mamatrout wants one too. There are many different types of sonar out there. Get what you feel you need. But also check out the posts in the forum, there are many on the different types of sonar available and what is being used. TD even has many different posts on different types that you will find interesting. Let us know what you get.

For fishing local lakes, you really don't need a really powerful unit. A unit with 1,600 watts is more than enough to fish local lakes. The main thing to look for is the amount of vertical pixels. The higher the pixel count, the better the detail. Most sonar units have a 20 degree cone. Then there are those that have dual frequencies. These units allow you to use either a 20 or 60 degree cone. You get to see a wider area with a 60 degree cone, but you also lose some detail. As for screen size? IMO, I think this is more of a personal preference. I'm not in the market for a new fish finder, so I haven't really been checking what's out there now. I'm using a Lowrance X510c on my float tube now and I love it.
