Im new to ice fishing. I heated my shelter with a pump up white gas stove, and it gave me a wicked headache, and i felt like throwing up a few times. Sounds like i was getting cobon monoxide poisning. I had the only two vent open on my shelter. I would like anyones feedback on what they use.

Mr. Heater big buddy or little buddy.. They are indoor safe and transport easy. Won't give you a headache or nothing using it in closed quarters. Very toasty warm too. You can get them refurbished at Cal-Ranch stores for a decent price. (You actually just missed a pretty good sale on them that ended Sunday). They run on the 1lb bottles of propane.

It does sound like co2 poisoning... which is odd. I've never had anything remotely like that with my stove. In fact my shelter gets so hot with it on low I usually have a door partially unzipped as well.
Definitely give something else a try!

I think it was your post I read Dallan. That is why I tried it. It kept me plenty warm but I guess i dont have enough ventilation. I am fishing out of an eskimo 2 man quick flip/fish. Will look into the Mr. buddy from cal ranch.
best deal I could find was here 50 bucks, new.

The Mr. Buddy is nice but they have a oxygen sensor and most won't work above 7000 ft. In fact many stop working at lower elevation. It is a great safety feature for use in your home but causes problems on high lakes.

I use a Coleman black cat catalytic heater. I've been very happy with this heater so far. It's a solid heater, compact, simple, not expensive, and works at any altitude you are going to ice fish at. You can get the one you have to light, like mine, or an upgraded one with an electric start. Like any heater, it consumes oxygen, so if you get woozy let some air in. The Mr. Buddy has a little more BTU's though.

•Provides comfortable warmth whether indoors or in a tent•3,000 BTU output operates up to 7 hours from one 16.4 oz. propane cylinder (not included)•Compact legs integrate into collar for easy storage•Portable easy-to-grip handle makes heater easy to carry•U.S. Patent 6,213,761

That one looks cool. and very handy for Ice tent. But the one I was talking about is this one... Cal Ranch in west Jordan had a bunch of refurbished ones last week for 49 bucks. I bet you could talk them into giving it to you for the sale price still (Maybe)

Mr Buddy all the way. I have never had mine malfunction(aside from bad propane tanks) and has always worked for me even at 11,000' elevation. They put out a ton of heat and are safe for enclosed spaces. They will shut off if the Co levels get too high(which it never has). Well worth the money and you can buy 5# tanks with adapters for continuous usage beyond a few hours. The 1# tanks will last about 3 or 4 hours on high and 5 or 6 on low.[ ]

Been there, done that!! and it sounds like your stove might be running rich. Vent far more.. Allow lots of fresh air in and nasty air out.
Btw, a 2 gl. bottle of propane and my portable sun on low keeps my shanty 70+ degrees inside while its well below 0 outside.

I have the big mr buddy heater and mine goes out all the time in my ice tent, and I hate it. I was just about to go out and buy one without the o2 sensor. But if yours doesn't do it why does mine? Have you done any adjustments to yours?

I have had that problem also but i have noticed that if you try to move it it will go out if it gets bumped it will go out i think it has a safety level in it so it goes out if it tips over. But mine has never quit working when i use it.

There was a thread a while back on the subject. Seems that some had problems and others didn't. I have never had any problems with mine.[ ]

Brody I think you just got lucky with yours.[ ] When I was doing research on them before I bought mine for the house I found a lot of complaints of them shutting off at as low as 6000ft. The box says they won't work over 7000ft. Loved the complaint that one wouldn't work at all at 11 or 12000 ft.
Might just have to hall mine up to Strawberry and Huntington and see if it will work.[cool]

I have the older style Mr. Heater. (same company that makes the Buddies). It is not certified for indoor use, but my tent has lots of ventilation.
I have done a few modifications to it so that it runs on 1lb tanks and sits flat. That way i can cook breakfast in the shack.
The heater keeps it plenty warm. The kid in back with no coat is also wet up to his waist. A couple hours after this picture he was dry.
