I went up to the Berry with Uinta Ice and my brother-in-law. On the drive up to Strawberry I told Uinta Ice that we've yet to catch a fish over the slot and i'd like to see us do that. I also told him that we're so close to fishing the hard deck and since we just signed up for the ice fishing contest let's save a big one for winter. Well, I spoke to soon.
We were fishing with white tubes. The last couple trips up there I've fished with two different sizes. I usually use the 2 inch tube, but every now and then I switch to a 3 1/2 to shoot for a bigger fish. I've caught fish with the 3 1/2 before, but usually it seems like it's tough for the normal 19 to 20 inch fish to get it's mouth around the tube. Well, the fish I caught yesterday had no problem getting this tube down it's mouth. It could have fit a few of these tubes in it's mouth at once, when the average fish up there would get a mouth full.
I snagged a 26 inch 6 1/2 pounder. The girth was 14 inches, and alone the tail was 7 inches wide. It was the only fish I caught all day, but I wouldn't have traded it for a full season of catching 20 or 30 normal sized fish up there. What a fight! I had a blast yesterday and will never forget it. Thanks again Uinta Ice!
As for the ice fishing contest, I guess I'll just have to settle with a 19 or 20 incher.
