On the another thread, [url "http://www.bigfishtackle.com/forum/Utah_Fishing_Forum_C55/Utah_Fishing_General_F58/gforum.cgi?post=450106;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;page=unread#unread"]Fall Gorge Browns[/url] , I brought up the idea of a bunch of BFT members getting together and putting a dent in the burbot population, even some of the smaller macks that the DWR want to thin out. I ask folks that were interested to send me a PM and from the response I think there is enough interest to put something together. The date I'm looking at is the 10th of Jan but the idea would be to fish for the smaller macks and burbot. This would be a good chance to learn how to catch both these fish or just one or the other. The mack fishing would be earlier in the day and the burbot fishing would be the evening and night. This is still a couple of months away because it will be on the ice and we want it thick enough to support the weight of a bunch of fishermen. Please respond to this thread or send me a PM to voice your interest and I will see if we can get some prizes together for this event. Also if anyone wants to help out with this or put any prizes up that would be awesome. Thanks

One of the reasons for the bash is to help you guys out in learning how to catch these fish, if we can have some fun along the way all the better. The Utah DWR and the Wyoming F&G want us to keep all the burbot that are caught, so I think we can do our part in thinning them out. We will be more than happy to show anyone how to catch these fish and maybe even how to cook them up. Just so you guys can stock up early, buy glow tube or curly tail jigs, if you can find sucker meat get it and stock up on crawfish smelly jelly, pro cure or what ever brand you can find.
The burbot catching is best in the late evening or night, so it would be best if folks come prepared to stay on the ice for a while. How long you stay will be up to you but on my last two trips we stayed until 10 and 11pm. The place that I want to have this event will not require ATV's or snowmobiles, you will be able to walk less than 100 yds or no more than several hundred yards and you can drive right down to the ice. This event is for BFT members and their families, but other folks are welcome. Only BFT members will qualify for the bigger give a ways. Burbot are great eating, similar to cod. Fishley recently caught some that were 36 inches long but I would say they average 20 to 22 inches depending on the area. They can be fun to catch when you get into them but they are very slimy.

I'M IN THE PROCESS OF CONTACTING SEVERAL POTENTIAL SPONSORS THAT HOPEFULLY WILL DONATE ITEMS THAT WE WILL GIVE AWAY AT THIS EVENT. THE FIRST SPONSOR TO GET ON BOARD IS MANIAC LURE, THANKS JAMES. We also have had a rod and reel combo donated by Smith & Edwards, Thanks Mike Casey. Utah did make it legal for us to use up to 6 poles while ice fishing for burbot but it has been legal in Wyoming to fish for the burbot with 6 poles for several years. Everyone from utah will need to buy a Wyoming stamp to fish in the area we will be at and if you bring an ATV you will need a sticker for it also.
Hopefully everyone will be able to go back out there and catch them for yourselves after this event.

We are planning on setting up at 2pm and having a BFT banner with table set up in a spot between the end of the Lost Dog road and the cliffs on the opposite side by the Black Fork branch. [font "Times New Roman"]I got a phone call from Adam Eakle yesterday confirming that Roughin’ It Outdoors will be there to film a show about the Burbot Bash. Looks like the Wyoming Game and Fish as well as the Forest Service(FS) will be there, so everyone make sure they label their tents and fishing poles with their names and address. A problem I ran across while applying for the FS permit will be giving away any big items to BFT members while we are fishing. We will be OK to give away some of the smaller items like jigs that anyone will be able to get, member or not. I will still be checking off members as you arrive and drawing names out of a hat before dark but I will have to mail your prize to you. It was the only way I could get a permit from the FS, with out paying big $$$. There have been some other things happen, Adam Eakle wants to do part of his show about how to fillet a burbot and then how to cook them. Adam will be asking some of the local guys to catch some burbot and have them ready to cook before dark, maybe the same for the fillet part too, just in case we don’t catch any before dark. This will be a good chance for some of you to learn how to fillet these fish, along with getting a chance to taste them. The FS wants to call this a Burbot clinic and that is fine but the Tshirts will still say BFT 2009 Flaming Gorge Burbot Bash. Here is some additional info I will be required to tell folks as they arrive, so for you BFT members it will be good to read it now so I don’t have to repeat it a 100 times.[/font]

watching small children around the ice holes at all times, thin ice, and what to look for when going on the ice at the beginning of the season and the end of the season and being careful on slick ice. Hypothermia can be a real problem if you're not prepared to be on the ice for long periods of time in frigid conditions, so we will stress the importance of dressing appropriately and if anyone happens to get wet the importance of having a change of clothing. I also recommend an ice tent to get out of the wind if it picks up.
For all that bring kids- please remember that small children can easily slip into ice holes, so please keep a close watch over them. It is always a good idea to bring extra cloths, socks and shoes in case anyone steps into a snow covered holes. [/font]

It takes around three hours to drive from the Qgden area to Green River depending on road condition, maybe another 30 minutes or so to get down to Lost Dog. There is a camping area a few hundred yards from the water where you can park a truck and camper. You will need to label your ice fishing tent and your fishing poles if you use more than two, with your name and address.
