[cool][#0000ff]Got spoiled last week in Idaho. Came back to Utah and had to put up with abuse and poor fishing.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Swedishfish and I launched at the PWC ramp about 7 AM. Second cast FISH ON... a small slimer at 7:05. Caught several more near shore on a new fire tiger spinner I was trying. They hit hard and fought well but not worth keeping. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The water temp was 59 at launch...quite a bit warmer than the 31 degree air temp. A mist was rising off the lake, which was rippled by a light early breeze. That made a nice effect when viewed along with the early sunlight on the bright leaves on the nearby hillsides. Who cares if the fishing is slow on such a purty morning? I did. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]After deciding there were not any larger troutskis near shore, I moved out into deeper water. Switched to jigs on the bottom. I thought the sonar was broken. Nothing but a straight line on the bottom, with no fishy interruptions. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Swedishfish picked up a couple of bitty bass and I finally got into a small school of small perch. Nothing over about six inches. Real tackle testers. Worked from 8' to 30' without finding anything worthy of excitement. Decided to kick across the bay to the "quarry" area.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Had a couple of hits on spinners while motating across the open water. No hookups. When I reached the heavily structured and waterless shoreline I kept tossing the spinner along the visible structure. Caught a few more dinky perch in shallow water and one about 9 inches. It turned out to be the largest perch of the day for me. Swedishfish didn't get any perch.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Just as I rounded the point into the quarry cove, I fired a few casts with the trusty red glitter roadrunner, with the red and chartreuse skirt. Several under twelve smallies wanted to play so I exercised 'em, gave 'em a smooch and sent 'em back down to grow up some more. Had one about 16" that only wanted to come up as far as the tube, had a good look at me and gave me the jig back. Got the enjoys out of him before the "professional release" anyway.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Worked around to the area where I had found lots of perch a couple of weeks earlier. All I found this trip was dry shoreline and naked tree branches in my "honey hole". The lake is still dropping fast...too fast. Couldn't find any remnants of the school I fished last time. Fished from shallow out to about 30 feet. Had a couple of small fish hooked in 24 feet of water but they wrapped me on the thick structure before I got them to the top. I hate it when that happens.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]About 9 the south breeze had started rippling the waters. By 10 it was stronger. About 10:30 it was getting bothersome. Since there were no fish to offset the fun of the bouncy ride, we decided to wind troll back to the launch area to see if anything had moved in on the gravel banks.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The long kick back was uneventful, but the hills were still worth frequent looks. Only a few tiny pecks from little perchlets near the ramp so we wasted no more time on them. We got out and were on the way home by noon. As Swedishfish observed "Still better than working or sitting around the house." That's what we say when the fishing is poor.[/#0000ff]

Too bad Utah had to be such a hard reality check today. The background colors sure help distract from the lack of fish.

[black]Sounds like a great outing. You know as well as anyone that a fishing trip is not measured by the weight of your creel. You got a few to come out to play. Enjoyed your post, good read.[/black]

The photos are great, that's scenery that people pay big bucks to see in the north east.

Sounds like the weather will hold for a few trips until Friday.

[Smile]Hi TD, thanks for the report and the great pics, sure is pretty out there huh. My fishing reports weren't much last week either but the scenery was magnificent not too mention the surround sound of elk bugling at lost creek early in the morning, absolutely serene. Well take care and keep on keepin on!![Wink]

[cool][#0000ff]Thanks for the kindly words. Glad you enjoy the vicarious sharing.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]No skunks today. But there was a raccoon in the headlights at the ramp when we drove up. Also several varieties of woterfowl. No deer. I guess the hunters have spooked them away from human frequented areas.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You are 100% keerect. A successful trip is definitely not measured in pounds of dead fish.[/#0000ff]

Thanks TD for the trip. Even without big numbers of fish (or big fish for that matter) it was good to get out and an enjoyable trip.

Oh ya... TudeDude also shared a few hearty pieces of his smoked catfish. That alone made the trip a success. Wow! That was good. I joked with TD that every time I'm around him, my wish list of fishing necessities gets longer. Now I have to add a smoker to the list. [Wink]

Hi Pat. Long time no hear, it's good to hear your latest fishing report. The hillside colors are really kicking in now.

Why do you think the fishing was slow at Jordanelle? Do you think the low waters are starting to effect the fishing? I was at Hyrum last weekend and couldn't believe how low the reservoir is getting to be.

At any rate, I need to break out the pontoon and join you again one of these times. Thanks for the pics, and good hearing from you again!

[cool][#0000ff]There are plenty of excuses for not catching a lot of fish, and probably some good reasons too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There was a bright moon last night, but that has never been a big factor for me...as far as perch are concerned.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The water level is falling fast. That can be a factor. Fish just get adapted to a comfort zone and the water drops low enough that they have to move. They never get a chance to really settle in.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water temps are dropping fast. Water temps are always a factor in fish moods. Sudden drops of even a couple of degrees can give fish temporary lockjaw.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Weather patterns. We have had a series of lows go through. I generally prefer to do my fishing at least three days after the beginning of a stable weather warming period. Not possible the last week or so.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Fall patterns. Most fish respond to decreasing hours of daylight by becoming less active and moving deeper in the water column.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The "Ryan factor". So far, every trip I have gone with swedishfish has turned out to be "less than stellar". Could be he is a jinx. I seem to catch plenty of fish on other trips.[/#0000ff]

Now I know how road feels. You won’t use the moon as an excuse; but if the wind blows too hard, it’s road’s fault. If you don’t catch a lot of fish, it’s Ryan’s fault. I think I’m starting to see a pattern here.
Although… every hypothesis needs to undergo a series of rigorous tests before it can be proven, so I guess that just means more time on the water with me tagging along to see just how valid this jinx theory is.

[cool][#0000ff]As with most theories, this one will require many more trials and tests before it can be definitively established as scientific fact.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I am willing to devote the time on the water in further experimentation and study.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I suspect that the lower catch results up to this point are not really attributable to "THE RYAN FACTOR", but something a lot more reasonable and plausible. Perhaps there is an invasion of invisible aliens who delight in spreading a non-lethal but anesthesizing substance on the waters just ahead of our fishing trips. Hey...it COULD happen.[/#0000ff]

If I recall, the ONE time we hooked up you did pretty well Pat. Keep the "Derek Factor" stored in your memory banks for future use heheh

[cool][#0000ff]Like most of the good things in life, it takes a lot of fishing trips with the same person before you can really start forming a REAL opinion. Just as in other friendships, business, love relationships, marriage and other associations, it is impossible to make accurate snap evaluations that are going to be on the mark. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Yes, our first and only shared water experience (on Mantua) was nothing but positive. But, we always have to be prepared for the possibility of the occasional downer trip. NOBODY has good trips out every time. But, that is one of the things that makes fishing such a fun challenge.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I'm ready to keep putting the "Derek Factor" to the test. Now if Mama Nature will settle down for a few days in a row we can work out a venue and a time.[/#0000ff]

[#008080]Sounds good to me. As you say, all theories need to be constantly tested; and then tested again. We still need to hit Willard if we can for my first ever 'Wiper'![/#008080]

[#008080]As for me, I'm going to take my 11 yr. old boy and my soon-to-be 5 yr. old girl out to Hyrum tomorrow early a.m. (parent teacher conference- he's got the day off school). I'm going to check to see if my theory is correct in that the big rainbows are still cruising close to the shallows snacking on minnows during this cooler weather. [/#008080]

[#008080]All I gotta do is stop by wally world after work tonight and get some of that messy power bait stuff that troutskis like so much...[/#008080]

I was up there last thursday and friday. Couldn't seem to locate any big perch either. But the second day when I went over by the quarry, I was able to bring home some 9 inchers. I was floating in about 16 feet of water and casting into 6-9 feet of water. Had to bag my painted jigs and tie on a perch color spinner to get them to smack. Also picked up a few small smallies in the same holes.
