Oregon Fisheries Update
March 28th – April 3rd, 2003 - The best thing to come along since the innovation of the sardine fillet on the plug bottom is Bob's Bait Wraps to put this sardine fillet on the plug bottom.&#nbsp; It makes wrapping your plugs SO MUCH EASIER that you will never go back to stretchy thread.&#nbsp; And now it's available from The Guide's Forecast!&#nbsp; Just click onto the order form, print it and send it off!&#nbsp; The Guide's Forecast is THE ONLY place where you can get the guide packs of Bob's Bait Wraps.&#nbsp; For distinct colors and smaller quantities, go to Fisherman's Marine and outdoor in Oregon City or Delta Park.&#nbsp; You won't regret it!&#nbsp; Go now to: the order sheet and order up before the season is over!&#nbsp; And how do you fish these plugs?&#nbsp;
Higher flows on the Willamette are quite conducive to backtrolling plugs for spring chinook.&#nbsp; Just go to: the tech report ordering page and order tech report #11- Backtrolling and Forward Trolling Plugs for Salmon and Steelhead and get busy catching fish!
How's fishing?&#nbsp; Well, despite sturgeon closures on the Columbia and muddy water everywhere else, things are looking up.&#nbsp; Spring chinook fishing on the Columbia above the mouth of the Willamette is fair but it will improve.&#nbsp; Government Island has been putting out consistent catches.&#nbsp;
The Willamette has been out of shape but if the weather cooperates, we could be looking at great conditions by early next week.&#nbsp; Most of us are quite anxious to get the Willamette season underway.&#nbsp; Sturgeon fishing on the Columbia above Wauna power lines (Westport, OR) is only open for catch and release until July 1st.&#nbsp;
The Santiam River was putting out some wild steelhead but with the increase in flow over Willamette Falls, passage has slowed.&#nbsp; April is a good month for wild fish on the Santiam's however.&#nbsp; The Clackamas and Sandy Rivers are coming back into shape with the Clackamas the best option for keeper steelhead.&#nbsp; Springers are being taken in the Sandy especially near the mouth where interception of a Columbia River Springer is also an option.&#nbsp;
The North Coast is finally fishing again and the prospects for the weekend look great!&#nbsp; Only the Wilson and Siletz have broodstock fish available if table fare is your game.&#nbsp; The Umpqua is putting out some more spring chinook which is nice to hear this early in the season.&#nbsp; With all the large fish reported this year, we may see a real brute come from the Umpqua this spring.&#nbsp; This system is just now coming into great shape.&#nbsp;
The Coquille, Elk and Sixes Rivers are holding up for steelhead.&#nbsp; Daily winter steelhead limits are coming from the Rogue River.&#nbsp; The John Day River is starting to put out some nice bass fishing.&#nbsp; Although numbers aren't what they will be in a few months, the fish that are being taken are of quality size.&#nbsp;
Kokanee limits are being taken at Lake Billy Chinook.&#nbsp; After massive trout planting last week in preparation for spring break, only St.&#nbsp; Louis Ponds were planted this week.&#nbsp; Mild tides over the weekend would favor crabbing but recent rains will have catch rates down.
