Lake Powell
#1
[cool] Well my dad and i finally got a chance to go down to lake powell fishing.. I have went a few times but it was to do some wakeboarding and take out the house boat and stuff, but we wanted to fish this time and get some of those strippers.. sunday we didnt know what to try or where to go for sure.. we went to bullfrog and heard moqui canyon was doing good so we trolled up through it with some deep crankbaits and caught a couple small ones. then we found a huge cliff and tried some anchovies and dropped them deep but didnt seem to get much. We ended up with about 10 the first day and not amything big. The next day we went to a different cliff side in moqui canyon and started trying new things. I had a White jig with a glow in the dark maniac lure and i would tip it with some anchovie and we found that if you parked your boat about 15 feet from the cliff and through the jig as close to the cliff as possible and let it sink about 10-20 feet alot of times the strippers would swollow it on the way down.. we found that the bigger ones were right on the wall, and look for cracks or wierd shaped rooks on the wall and cast right into them.. My dad used a white pearl plastic shad with anchovie and we caught around 70 strippers that way and missed alot more.. The biggest was almost 5 pounds and we had a few in the 4 pound range, but most were 3 and under.. They were really long but just skinny.. Also when one of us would hook one the other would throw the jig right were the fish was caught and almost always there was a another fish following it.. We had quite a few double strippers on.. The weather was perfect and it was so much fun. A couple questions i have are what is a good recipe for the stripers and do those skinny stripers fatten up now that its spring or is there just not alot of food for them so they dont get real fat?

there is not a lot of food, you should check out wayneswords.com, post your report and read some of the posts. Some great info about powell there.

[#0000ff]The 'stripers' at lake powell have been on a boom and bust cycle for years. When the Shad are plentiful there are lots of Healthy Stripers. As the Striper population booms they eat all the shad. With limited shad the stripers starve and the shad get stronger. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Wayne Gustaveson (Fisheries Bioligist for Lake Powell) continues to teach that the only way to keep the striper population in check is to harvest all the stripers you can. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If the stripers are too skinny to keep, he suggests that you cut their swim bladder and sink them, letting the Lake Recycle them. [/#0000ff]
