Final Fishing Trip Of The Year: Oregon 9/1 to 9/5
#1
Just got back from Oregon earlier. Long ride, cool weather, but it was definately worth it.

First day we did a bottom fish/salmon combo. My dad whacked a #45, 38" Chinook five minutes into the day. Big fishy. After that the salmon sort of slacked off a bit. A couple 10-15# Silvers(Sivers suck when you want Kings) were all we hooked up with the rest of the day. Day before that Wayne caught 14 Kings for 7 people that went from 28-41#'s. And they just wouldn't bite for us. Stupid finacky things. Oh well. I don't care for them much, anyway.

So onto bottom fish. First drop I popped something bigger. Turned out to be a #8 Cabazon. Beautiful. Caught a bunch of Kelp Greenling, Copper, China, Vermillion, Black and Blue Rockfish to boot. My little brother hooked up with a big Ling Cod, but he broke off about 5' down. That fish would have went around 40", 30-35#'s easy.

Next day onto the boat at 5 for a Halibut trip. We were going to go tuna combo, but north winds the week before put them around 60 miles off shore. Not even worth it. The halibut turned out to be a chore in itself.

We couldn't keep the other 'unwanted' fish off of the herring. I've been on 5 Halibut trips now out of Depoe Bay, Newport, Westport, Garabaldi and Waldport, and I've never seen fishing like it. I personally caught around 15 Chilli Pepper Rockfish, 5 Black Cod, 2 sharks and a big 38" Ling before I nailed my Buttski. Nothing too huge; just 40#. Average fish. My dad popped a monster, at least by Oregon standards. 55", weighed in at 85#'s. Nice fishy. My uncle and another guy on the boat also got fish in the 60-70# range. Great trip.

I want to put in another plug to everyone out there for Prowler Charters out of Bandon, Oregon. www.prowlercharters.com They run, bar none, the best charter company in the Pacific Northwest. I've been out of a lot of places, and these guys are the best. Ken, Wayne and Brent all keep you out fishing, catching fish and having a great time, until you've had your fill or a limit. Fishing's the best on the coast. Give them a try. I guarentee you that you'll love your trip with them.

Ok, finally we went to Newport for a couple days of crabbing and relaxing. Yeah, right. The crab were still hot. I caught another 24 in two days, crabbing just an hour each day. Amazing to see 8 keeper Dungies in the pot. Started getting kinda heavy after pulling up three traps, though.

The fishing off of the dock was stellar again. I caught 15 big pile perch on monday, 18 on tuesday. And the fishing for Blacks, Coppers and Dusky R.F. at night was great. Fishing an ultra light rig up with light 1/32 oz. tubes I caught easilly 100 of the buggers each night. When you hook a 3 or 4# bass with that rig up you know it.

It was a great trip again. I can't wait to get back up there. In fact, I'm trying right now to get a place up there, I love it so much. So much for fishing this year. it's time to break out the rifle.

BTW, I couldn't find the camera tonight, so pics in the morning!

[cool][#0000ff]Great report. Brings back a lot of good memories. I have lived and fished along the coast and really enjoy the bottom fish...as well as salmon. Love those big ling cod. They are scary when they open those huge mouths. Great eating too.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Sounds like you got to get in on just about everything there is to fish for on one trip. What? No clamming?[/#0000ff]

Sounds like an awesome trip! When I was very small, I used to live up in Oregon, but I've never had the chance to fish the ocean. Need to one day! Thanks for the report.

Here they are. I wish I could have gotten some more pics. One with some of the perch or crab would have been cool. Oh well. There's always next year.

I love the lings. My favorite fish to catch and eat. It's amazing how voracious they are, too. About half our rock fish got nipped on the way up by ling.

I wanted to clam, just didn't hit the tides right. A limit of razor clams woulda been really nice to come home with, too.
