When exactly, will that river warm up? Cooler water temperatures are keeping sturgeon from aggressively biting, smelt from entering the river and spring chinook from taking a strong look at jumpstarting our season on the Columbia River. Things don't look any better this weekend as cool, wet weather will keep things status quo on the mainstem. The 12th annual Fisherman's Marine and Outdoor Sturgeon Derby will be taking place this weekend so prepare for crowds and a great time if you are participating. The Clackamas and Sandy Rivers are oddly devoid of steelhead. Catches are certainly sporadic and it is becoming painfully apparent that we are not going to get the return that we have seen in years past. The real truth will be told when we get a shot of warmer weather to stimulate the bite and spring migration.

Spring chinook fishing on the lower Willamette river has just started to chow signs of life, with trollers in the area of the Sellwood Bridge taking several on Wednesday, March 3rd and plunkers at Meldrum Bar scoring a few earlier this week. This run will improve in the next few weeks.

Santiam steelheaders continue to take winter steelhead and a few summers are showing in the mix. Both the North and South Santiam are at low winter levels. The North Coast streams did not fish particularly well either this week but an improving tide series along with appropriate run timing may change this week. Smaller river systems may be a favored location this weekend as predicted precipitation may put larger streams too high for productive fishing.

Most South coast streams remain high an off-color, although the Coquille is producing steelhead. Lowe Umpqua anglers are catching over-sized sturgeon and looking forward to improved river conditions in order to take advantage of the springers which are entering now. The Rogue is also high but offers steelheading opportunities on the upper river. Eastern Oregon steelhead rivers were fishing very well this week and conditions may favor steelheaders again this week. The Grande Ronde and Wallowa Rivers are top bets for desert steelhead.

Bass fishermen are starting to ply the temperate waters of the coastal lakes. As Oregonians feel the first signs of spring, it won't be long 'til smallmouth bass become active in the Willamette and Columbia Rivers as well as at Hagg Lake, producer of several consecutive State record smallies.

Trout have been planted this week in the following locations : Cape Meares Lake, Coffenbury Lake, Cullaby Lake, Hebo Lake, Lost Lake (Clatsop County), Lytle Lake, North Lake, Smith Lake, South Lake, Spring Lake, Sunset Lake, Town Lake, Vernonia Pond, Henry Hagg Lake, Huddleston Lake, St. Louis Pond, Alton Baker Canal, Cottage Grove Reservoir and E. E. Wilson Pond.

A free Fishing Derby will take place at Ramp 'C' at Henry Hagg Lake on Saturday, March 6th from 6 A. to 2 P.M. Prizes will be awarded in numerous categories. A fee must be paid at the gate to gain entrance to the park.
