Brook Trout Habitat Restoration Celebration In Pepperell, Public Invited
#1
The Massachusetts Outdoor Heritage Foundation invites interested conservationists to a Brook Trout Habitat Restoration event on Wednesday, October 5 at 11AM at the Gulf Brook Conservation Area located at the intersection of Oak Hill and Chestnut Streets in Pepperell.

The Conservation Area is owned by the Town of Pepperell, with a Conservation Restriction held by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (DFW). The Massachusetts Outdoor Heritage Foundation undertook a brook trout habitat restoration project at this location in partnership with the Town, the DFW, and the Department of Fish and Game's Office of Fishing and Boating Access.

This project, accomplished with technical assistance from DFW fisheries staff, involved the replacement of two pipe culverts along Gulf Brook that were impeding fish passage. The new three-sided culverts have restored connectivity of this coldwater resource to the Nissitissit and Nashua rivers for the Eastern Brook Trout, a handsome and popular fish species native to Massachusetts.

Funding for the project was a combined effort from the Frank Nims Family Trust, the Stephen F. Quill Family Foundation, the Squan-a-tissit and Greater Boston chapters of Trout Unlimited; and the Nashua River Watershed Association. DFW fisheries staff will present a brief overview of the project, representatives of the partnership will also be on hand to join the conversation, and the area can be toured to view the new gravel-bottomed culverts and enjoy the surrounding conservation area.

Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Light refreshments will be served. If planning to attend, please RSVP to Susan Benoit, (413) 230-4945 orsusan.benoit@massoutdoorheritage.org.
