Registering a poontoon boat for trolling motor use
#1
I know the process varies from state to state, but what I want to know is if the serial number on the inside of my left AIRE tube is the hull ID number that is required for registration. Also, how do I go about getting a certificate of origin from a company that no longer exists? I don't have the original invoice for my Dave Scadden Cardiac Canyon and Dave Scadden no longer exists. Dave moved on to NFO, but I highly doubt they have any records of the transaction.

My Cardiac had the number on the outside of the toon down on the inside, but you said you had the Outcast toons?

Two suggestions. 1. Call NFO and ask Dave, or 2. take the pontoon and the motor to the DMV.

Well I can tell you what I did. My toon was purchased in 1995. No receipt etc... The state (UT) has a proof of ownership form that I filled out that had info such as dates purchased and why I did not have the infor. I put that I purchased it in 1995 and has no receipt or hull number. They assigned me a hull number. Not sure where you are from but email the DMV. I did and they gave me some help, the rest I found online when I read their forms. I took the boat with me so that they could inspect it and they didn't need to do that either. Hope this helps.

Very good to know Albino. As I said, I called Dave Tuesday and got the form today with a Haul number sticker for future reference.
Now just got to get over to the DMV.

OMG! I went yesterday to license the new Outlaws. First off, a little strange that Scadden or North Fork isn't in their system as he has been making boats for years. Water Skeeter was there though.
Anyway, so I get a newbie that had no clue. For an hour we tried to figure out what the boat is.
Then to top it off, as mention, I need a bill of sale...wahoo, I have that, but now they want a receipt.. What the heck do you do if the boat is older and you now want to add a motor?

So I call Dave, and he faxed the tax down not once, but three times!!!! They did not get it.

The smart thing would have been to walk away, get the receipt and go back as the lines are pretty quick, but not me.....I ended up paying the tax in the dollar figure of $60. more for the two boats...DANG!!!! So a total of $129. for two boats.

Good news is, I got the paper work for the TAX REFUND because I have already paid tax and Dave is SENDING me the receipt.

So, I have to wait for the refund,,,,,what a crock!

I know I could have just kept using my Cardiac plate cause they were getting there $ every year and they have no clue how this works.

The new registration has the boat listed not a an Outlaw, but a North Fork...so....I am pretty much covered for future boats...he, he, he

FG,

Your experience was better than mine although my person had no idea what kind of boat I had either. Since I bought it out of state and paid no tax, California wants their cut but they don't call it a tax, it's a use fee and it's about 10% plus the 10% penalty for not registering within 30 days (I think she was mistaken on that). Then on top of the annual registration fee, we have an annual property tax but I don't know how much that'll be.

Now it looks like many of the lakes around here that have annual fees (Big Bear, Isabella, Castaic, etc.) require a higher fee for registered boats vs non-registered ones.

Maybe I should have just kept rowing and skipped the motor until they devise an excercise tax.[Smile]

now why on Gods green earth would they charge a higher fee for a boat that is registered than one that is not... I would think it would be the other way around.. its almost like you are being penalized because you took the time to legally register your boat... how does that make any sense??

The only thing I can think of is that the registered boats generally require use of the ramp (mine doesn't but I'll use it if it's there) and they might have some minor maintenance or monitoring cost associated with that.

Charging a launch fee for float tubes doesn't really make sense to me at places that don't charge to fish from shore.

We are paying for education and roads just like cars. Rediculous.
However, if you don't put a motor on a toon there is no reason to register it.
If if you can stop that motor with your hand[crazy]
You have to license even small boats with a motor, but you don't need to license a motor unless it is over 25 hr. We loved our 25 Merc 4 stroke[laugh]
As far as ramps, most Utah water with ramps, you are paying extra to use the ramp and the parking lot, but there is restrooms and some, a cleaning station. Even a little store on some.

Not sure why, but general organization. They mentioned a flat rate for boats under 12 feet...they need to do that and include ANY pontoon.
And figure out something different for older pontoons that you want to NOW add a motor. You are NOT going to have a receipt, and shouldn't be charge a second tax for no reason.

I understand your comment on ramp fees.. but what is the difference if you launch a registered or unregistered boat.. you are paying the same ramp fee correct??

I may of missed something here so Im just asking.. its that "curiosity killed the cat thing " I guess...

You are correct, but I think he meant, with no motor, you can launch just about anywhere, where with the motor and battery, a ramp is really nice.

On the lakes I fish there is a $6 or $7 vessel fee, which they charge for going on the lake. Makes no difference if you use the ramp or not. I pay the $65 annual fee.
