Steelhead in Idaho
#1
Hey all,
I am going to Idaho next week to fish for some steelhead. I have never done this before and need some help. I am taking both fly gear and spinning gear. If anyone can give me some suggestions on what to use, I would greatly appreciate it.

Jacob I dont know where you are going. I always fish towards challis. There are many areas to fish in this region. As far as where to go, go where everybody else is obiously they are all there because that is where the fish are in the river at that point. Yes it is combat fishing but you can find room for yourself im sure. I have always had great sucess with a egg sucking leech pattern. Fished dead drift or like a steamer. Have fun fallow the people thats where the fish are good luck

You don't have to combat fish, thats what we thought until we learned how to steelhead fish[laugh]just kidding, it is true the most of the fish are usually caught where the people are. Find any decent hole fish it like you know there is fish in it and you should catch fish. If you drift fish i prefer roe, if you don't know how to rig it let me know, my brother also does good popping a spoon along the bottom. If you're fly fishing, this time of year if the water is clear use a very small orange glo bug or something to that effect, if water is murky use black. Good Luck.

I have had luck throwing Blue Fox Vibrax spinners in #3 & #4 sizes. Electric blue with silver blade, flame w/ brass blade, chartreus w/ silver blade. Also for larger pools, try some mag warts or similar plugs in fire tiger. Good luck.

They are like a hot shot. Depending on the water depth, you will have to vary the size of the bill. Very effective through deep pools.
