Curse of the Auger
#1
After hearing of Bassroads woes, I thought I would whine a little bit about mine. I am curious to hear if any others have had similiar experiences. Here are the chain of events from the past week:

1- Started up power auger in garage. It ran fine.
2- Took it to Bear Lake, wouldn't start.
3- Got up next morning, started on first pull.
4- Came home later in the afternoon, started it and it ran fine.
5- Immediatley went to local resevoir (about 15 minutes away) it
would not start.
6- Has some scouts ask me to take them fishing. Got out the auger,
after several pulls it started.
7- Went to lake, wouldn't start. Finally after 20 minutes it fired.

We pulld the plug, had spark. Plug was a little dark but not much.

I have had this auger for 3 years. The last two it has ran great. I am totally Confused as to whats going on??? Any advice???

[#ff0000]Note[/#ff0000]: I just realized I put this in the General Forum. If a moderator wants to move it the the Off Topic Forum, please feel free to do so. Thanks.

[cool][#0000ff]Unless you try to blame YOUR auger problems on me too, we can run it up the flagpole for others to salute.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I have a Jiffy 3 horse 10" auger that can be temperamental too. Same thing...runs like gangbusters at Salt Lake altitude and temperatures. Hit the lake on a cold morning and it is a workout to get the sucker to fire. I usually have to mess with the idle and carb settings to get it going the first time and then trim it back to best running settings.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Cold can affect most 2 strokes. If you make the run to the ice with the auger in the back of your truck, and get both cold air and snow in the works, it may be a bit balky to get started. I know I am.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You might also try shooting some more gas into the works with the primer...and also pulling the start rope a couple of times without the switch being on. Then turn the switch on and try again. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Augers are like females...sometimes temperamental. (Sorry ladies. I have been married a looooooooonnnnngggg time, and I got a few female dissing points saved up.)[/#0000ff]

One possible problem is that you are priming (assuming this is one that must be primed) it more on the lake and as a result it is being flooded. My auger will usually work great unless I prime it too much. To avoid this I prime it one pump at a time and pull the rope, and if it doesn't start prime it one more pump and repeat. BTW -- the only time my auger would not start at all was when I took it to Huntington with -- you guess it -- TubeDude. BTW - this is also why I never leave home without my hand auger as a backup, just in case my power auger will not work.

My 2hp baracuda started doing that last year. I had to replace the diaphram in the carb and get a new gas cap. I still need to adjust the carb but it runs almost like new.

Your points are well taken. One problem could also be the gas. I run it out every year but the exisisting gas, thats in the tank, has been there a while. I am going to drain all the gas and replace it with new gas. Hopefully, that will help.

Looking forward to hitting Bear Lake again.

[cool][#0000ff]As I recall, the reason you could not start your NEW auger at Huntington was a "loose nut on the pull rope". You had not read the directions properly. And, ain'tcha glad I had brought my hand auger...JUST IN CASE?[/#0000ff]

[#005000]The truth is that I had problems starting it because I read the instructions too carefully. I followed them to the letter -- which resulted in too many pumps of the primer bulb and flooding. Yes -- I am pleased that you brought your hand auger along, just wish that I would have been smart enough to quit trying to start my auger off and on all day long. My shoulder would have felt much better at the end of the day if I would have. Sorry, but it is too much fun to pick on the little guys.[Wink][/#005000]

My auger starts ok, always has, (4 years old now) but my complaint is the GAS TANK. Right out of the box it leaked. I could clearly see that the tank filler neck had a notch accidentally cut into it, so I contacted Ardisam and told them the situation. I clearly asked for a new TANK...so they sent me a new gas cap. I called again and yelled this time (I have very little patience for incompentency) and this time I got a new tank AND a new gas cap. So if you are keeping score, that means I have 2 tanks and 3 gas caps. Well, even the new tank didn't seal very well, and one of the new gas caps they sent me didn't have the rubber inside of it...anyway, long story short, I have lived with a leaky auger for 4 years now. My semi-working gas cap finally cracked last weekend, (which REALLY made it leak fuel..) so I ponied up and bought the new $9.00 cap at Sportsmans...which doesn't screw tightly enough onto the tank. Sheesh.

I'm just about ready to fabricate my own gas tank system for the my auger.

Thats my only complaint. OK, I've vented now...much like my gas tank on my auger vents inside my vehicle every weekend...

THANKS!

I just wanted to say thanks to all you folks for helping me not to regret buying a hand auger - it never leaks gas, and starts every time.[Wink]

[font "Arial"][black][size 3]That is the problem with a lot of augers. Was with my old one too. And elevation made it worse. Ran like new after that fix. But now I have a newer Jiffy Legend 3hp 9". Runs great! Of course I probably just jinxed it. [crazy] Snowmobiles are the same way, they are jetted to ride in the elevation we ride in. Not for here in the valley. Just my .02! [Wink]

I had the same problem with my new eskimo 3 horse two years ago, my problem was two fold, i didn't use top tier premium gas, and in loading it on the sled i had accidently put a small cooler in the area above the on/ off switch that in turn pushed it down to cause the switch not to connect after the viberation of the trip to the ice, it would work most of the time, but was a royal pain, the fix was simple and have had no problem since. Also my friend at ogden lawn and garden says leaving gas stored for longer than three or four months is the kiss of death in two strokes in cold weather, fuel stabbilizer helps some, but only for those that are freakish about cleaning and maintaining ther augers, but for the 5-6 bucks a new gallon and oil costs it's not worth the headache. hope this helps

Horse,

Due to not me not using my head, I solved half the problem. I always drained the gas from my auger but used the existing gas from the holding tank. Even though the tank is plastic and relatively clean, the fuel will/does change over time.

Great advice and thanks, I am going to drain it and run premium.

Thats pretty funny reading this cause just the other day at D.C I had the same problem with my Strikemaster lite I just bought a year ago! started it at home fine get to the lake with -10 degrees make the long hike out to my spot pulled and pulled wouldn't start for nothin?? lucky there were 2 nice gents that let me borrow there manual auger to get 1 hole to fish! I'm going to start leaving in the cab with me while driving there so the gas line won't freeze like that again.
