Has anyone been out on Bear Lake since it rained this past weekend? I hope that the ice is holding up-at least till next weekend.

Nice fish.
I am interested in the ice conditions too. I have been planning a trip for Friday and Saturday and have some family coming down from Idaho Falls. Any updates would be appreciated! [signature]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][size 3][black]As of Monday, February 12, 2007 the ice thickness on Bear Lake is 10-14” thick and even with the milder weather, there has been no melting along the shore or on top the ice. Access remains excellent for 4 wheelers and snowmobiles. Fishing for cutthroat trout and lake trout has improved some during the past week. The trout that have been taken are still full of cisco, but that should change in the next week. Fishing for whitefish continues to be slow since whitefish are still literally stuffed with cisco eggs. Again, this should change as the eggs are eaten and become less abundant. The fishing should continue to improve this week for both the trout and whitefish. The best luck right now for trout is coming off the west side of the lake from Gus Rich Point north to the Utah-Idaho line in depths of 70-90 feet. Anglers are beginning to catch a few whitefish off the weed beds south of Gus Rich Point on the west side of the lake and in the weedbeds off the pump house and between First and Second Points on the east side of the lake. Use small lures such as Swedish Pimples, jigs, and ice flys tipped with a waxworm or salmon egg for the whitefish in water 20-40 feet deep. Use tube jigs or largers Swedish Pimples and Castmaster-type lures tipped with cisco for the cutthroat trout and lake trout. Remember to watch out for springs, methane vents, and pressure cracks in the ice. Also stay away from the shelved-up ice, which is not safe. As an added safety measure, wear a set of ice picks around your neck on the outside of your clothing. The picks will help you to pull yourself out of the water if you should fall through. It is also a good idea to keep a length of rope with your ice fishing equipment as an additional safety measure. The last few days produced about 4” of snow on top of the ice, yet very little snow remained on the ground. Temperatures at night continue to remain below freezing so the ice is continuing to get thicker. Welcome to the site, BLP! Great pic!
I took my boys over there yesterday, just a couple miles south of Garden City. We fished in 70' of water, and the sonar would pick up schools of fish about midrange, every 20-30 minutes or so- but didn't get any takers. Tried different types of jigs, but I think they just were not hungry, probably still full of the cisco. There were two ice shacks to the south of us, and they had about as much success. The ice was 9", so I'm guessing it will be good for another couple of weeks. I think I'm going to head back there on Saturday. [signature]

I caught this fish 2 weeks ago. He put a good fight. I caught him on the west side of the lake. I caught him and then the ice cracked and split a couple hours later. That was a day full of accelerated heart beats!!!!
