Great 3 days of Florida fishing….

Had some great weather last week, took my girls out on Thursday for a little fishing trip. They each caught a nice Snook and a decent Redfish, the like catching them but won’t hold them. We fished an incoming tide around the flats of this spoil island.








Friday me and a buddy went out for a little more serious fishing, few throws of the castnet and had a livewell full of bait. Incoming tide again but windy, fishing was slow until we found a nice little oyster bed island, the fish were tucked in the backside and just slamming bait and it came around the points. Place was full of Trout and Snook.

Sunday we had a wild hair to make a day trip run to the Everglades, long day but fun…fishing was slow but we all managed some Peacock Bass and Oscars…..January fishing in Florida is pretty good.

When they dredged the channel in the intercoastal they just piled up the dirt and they turned into little islands "spoil island" they are all over in the intercoastal water way, good places to fish, I guess you can camp on them also.

OK, that makes sense. How about the Oscars, is this what you are calling an oscar? Is it some type of panfish or something else?

I think they are aquarium fish that have been let loose in the water ways of South Florida, they are invasive like the Mayan Ciclid, Snakeheads, Clown Knifefish and Pythons

Ok, I knew I had heard the name before, that is exactly what they are aquarium fish, just bigger than any I ever seen.

Remo- your third pic down with the snook with the flared fins is a killer pic! You should put it in a frame! I think it's just a neat pic of a neat fish.
I have had a few oscars in tanks back when I did south american cichlids in my tanks. They are aggressive, strong, and pretty clever. They can be kind of a bully. I have always been curious what they fight like on tackle. Also kind of curious how they might taste, too (not aquarium raised, but, like how you and your posse got them).
As much as I wish all those invasive species were NOT in the Everglades, I always find it fascinating to see their colors when caught in the 'wild' VS a captured setting- like an aquarium.

Thanks for the compliment. To answer your questions, Oscars fight very hard when caught and they are very aggressive. Their also a very spiny fish (dorsal fin) is nasty. When we were down last March we had breakfast in Everglades City and heard some local talking about catching and eating them, they said they were tasty. Also I believe you are supposed to kill all invasives that you catch.
