On the latest fishing report I got from the DWR, it said tiger musky were stocked in Yuba. I’m curious if anyone knows why tiger musky were stocked there. It seems interesting given the pike are struggling due to forage base, which I assume the tiger musky will have the same problem.

The stocking serves a few different purposes, including the following:
1. Increase esocid angler catch rates. We have seen a decline in pike CPUE the last three years during egg/brood collection. I believe this decline is due to lack of recruitment and our repeated collections for brood/eggs (for the TM program).
2. Provide a species we can use for disease certification instead of sacrificing adult Northern pike (which could be utilized for brood/eggs).
3. Provide a sterile predator that can utilize common carp.
