It won't take much pursuading for me to get up there again, with my boat in tow. Whether you make it up there again this year or not -- I can feel that river calling me again. If I go, I just hope that the wind behaves itself this time.

So, what exactly were you using for bait? I've heard that people use whole rainbow trout. Is that true? How do you fish it? Just sink it to the bottom of the deep holes?

We were fishing with nightcrawlers with a herring attractant. Quite amazing to hook huge fish on a couple crawlers. Thomson Outfitters uses dead rainbow trout that they purchase from the trout farms in Idaho. You must fish on the bottom, because with their suction type mouth that is where they feed. I have caught them on one fishing trip, so I will leave it to Lundman, the expert, to correct any misstatements, if any, that I have made.

Yup we went through 10 dozen night crawlers in 2 half days of fishing. They do sell quite a varity of sturgeon bait - eel, smelt, herring, and shad. All with varing results depending on the time on year.
You will have to put in some time to see what works best for the area you are fishing in - if fact wiperhunter2 heard that some folks were using sucker meat with the head attached below the dam - this was a new one on me.

I have exchanged a few emails with Kyle. He landed a 10 1/2 foot sturgeon on the Columbia last Sunday. As someone told me lately, it is quite the experience to catch a fish that one measures in feet.
