There are different species of algae in almost all waters. But the blue-green stuff really takes off when the conditions are just right...or just wrong. It has always been in Utah Lake and Utah Lake almost always has a minor bloom in late summer. But with our low water, hot summer and higher concentrations of nutrients it was "prime time" for a major event this year.
Doesn't seem to be much that controls either the algae or the mussels. Been a lot of lakes in a lot of states that have been trying to get rid of both. Maybe Trump can get rid of the stuff. Maybe feed it to all his illegal friends.
