Hi

Interestingly the problem was that the nut was on too tight. This is a large star drag reel and the handle fits on top of the star drag. When the reel was last serviced, the primary nut was screwed on too tight and then it has a tiny bolt to the side that holds that nut in place. The whole thing was tightened to the point that I had less than one revolution on the star drag. When i got it apart and cleaned and relubed i replace the nut to finger tight, put the locking bolt in place and now the drag can be freely adjusted.

This reel is an important part of our spread. We fish the Sea of Cortez out of San Carlos Sonora Mexico. This reel is our shotgun or WWB (way way back) rig that we pull from a rod holder on our radar arch. We load this reel with 50# dacron to reduce stretch since the jig on this rig is 150-200' behind the boat when we put it out. We also pull two jigs from transom flat lines and two more on the outriggers for a total of 5 lures in the spread. The shotgun has picked up a lot of fish for us and the big dorado especially like to nail it. The spread is simple and effective and only takes a one or two to manage the whole thing. That's important in a smaller boat when the action gets hot.

Sort of a long winded answer to your question but know you don't get to do much of this type of fishing in Michigan-I was born and raised there :-)

Bart Waldo
Vista Communications
http://www.vistatel.com
