Need help buying binoculars
#11
If you are not in the market for the really pricey stuff like Zeiss or Swarovski, I would 3rd, or 4th or 5th, the suggestion for Vortex. Also, Burris is an under-appreciated brand name with very good quality for the price. Nikon can be, but they make both good stuff and the upper end of junk, so be careful.

Porro prizm binoculars (straight case) are more popular than roof prizm (the type with the front lenses not in line with the small lenses) these days, as improvements in the ability to grind the prisms and align them have been made. However, cheap porro prizm glasses are often not properly aligned, and will give you a headache if used for long.

Remember, the higher the magnification, and the smaller the front lense, the better the glass and alignment quality need to be, which equals $$$$. You can very often see more on 8x40 than on 10x42 with glasses of similar brand and price due to this. But 10x42 in a decent quality is a great choice overall.
