I always fish with my kids so the "thickness of ice" threshold for me is 4-5 inches minimum.....goal #1 is safety, goal #2 is kids having fun and then catching fish is #3.
Claims or desires of some fisherman being "first on the ice" are perplexing to me....I for one am not impressed... these reports could lead to a false sense of security that endangers others...
