I gotta admit, every year I just change my light and ultralight reels over from my panfish rods to my ice rods, so I use the same line year round. But a few years ago I, too, spooled up one of my cheap reels (only kind I own, unfortunately) with the Micro Ice (I think) in the red color, and it definitely acts different. I lost or broke the reel, eventually.
Being able to see it against the ice saves a lot of time and tangles. It is very sensitive to light bites, and it knots better and stays put. I wouldn't say NO ice build up in the guides, but it really helps, and it won't freeze into the spool much, either.
