I wasn't planning on the pump to be able to continue to operate/take in any water when moving spot to spot. That is one of the many reasons why my fresh water line in comes in from above and then down to the bottom so water can't naturally drain out if the pump is off. I set the depth of the pump screen right at edge of the boats bottom. I'm not so certain that my PVC hanger for it could handle the rush of water at 40mph if I lowered it more. I could easily lower the pump and cut the 45 in it if it comes down to has to be done. I might have to bump up the PVC hanger to a bigger/stronger size or something to that affect to make it stronger. That mesh screen screws in quite a ways. I could cut the tip of the pump at a 45 and still put the screen on and leave it at it's current depth and see what happens. I guess one of those things that I need to get the boat on the water and see what there is to see.
The last time out/first time out with a baitwell I just turned the pump off and pulled it out of the water before getting up on plane. In the later afternoon we cruised around for over a hour and the bait seemed unaffected. 10 gallons is a lot of water and is enough to keep them happy for the short amount of time one is running around the basin I am thinking.
Will have to keep a eye on the drain and see if that happens (deadhead). It is in the water but not by a bunch. If anyone drives by or it is windy the rocking of the boat moves it in/out of the lake water. Nothing happened to me last time out with my first version.
