Lanyards definitely have their place for keeping frequently-used tools handy while leaving the bulk of your necessities stowed away... like in a drift boat for example.
A lanyard also compliments wet wading as a cooler option when combined with a lumbar pack (for example) to keep the bulk of your items off your shoulders and allowing for maximum air flow.
Forceps, nippers, tippet spools, floatant, and drying patches are some of the more common items I see on fly fishing lanyards.
