How do you get surface crappie to bite?

Not doubting those are crappie but how do you know, if you did not catch any? I think your idea about using flies is worth a try. Try to find out what it is that is on the surface and try to match it. A lot of people use a clear casting bubbles with a pistol pete fly about 3 or 4 ft behind. Not saying it will work but it is worth a try.
