I have fished in Utah for over 20 years now and have almost exclusively gone after rainbows and cut throats. Last year my son, daughter, dad and I decided to see if we could catch 10 different kinds of fish to expand our horizons. So far it has been a blast. Last year I caught 8 and my son and daughter each caught 10 different kinds. Dad started late and caught 5.
It has been fun trying new techniques even though we haven't been successful with many of them. We have yet to catch anything with the jigs that TubeDude suggests or with gulp minnows but We will keep trying. It has been more fun experimenting with than powerbait and worms.
Earlier this year we took our first ever trip to Fish Lake. It was as beautiful as everyone has described. Even better, we caught Splake, Perch, and rainbows through the ice. 2 new species for us.
Last month we took our first ever trip to Wilard Bay. We lucked into walleye, wiper, crappie and my dad even caught a catfish (funny that he has always considered them a trash fish.). All 4 of these are new species for us. Also the first time we had caught anything with a rapala.
Our next target is a tiger trout. We went ice fishing 4 times to Scofield this year and, while we did well on the skinny cut throat trout and even a few chubs (not sure that we will count chubs since they are definitely a trash fish [:/]) we never caught a tiger. I am ready to again try somewhere new.
I think we will also try to get to Lake Powell sometime because people's descriptions of those striper boils have me dreaming about them
. It sounds like we might even be able to go after large and smallmouth bass while we are there.
I will try to post some pics as we progress on our adventures. If you have any suggestions on where to catch a tiger or two I would love to hear about them.
Happy fishing!
