State of the Waters
#4
8000ft or higher watershed seems to be the key factor this year. There's good snow pack above 8000ft and thinning, rotten snow below. Last week at 5800ft, I walked into a small E. ID river that, last year, had chest deep snow on the trail until April. This year, in early March, the same south-facing spot has less than a foot of rotten hardpack and open ground around the trees. Waters that don't draw significant run-off from above 8000ft are in trouble. As usual, even in a bad year, the Tetons have some of the deepest snow pack in the West.
